Semex's Solution to Finding the Perfect Mate
02/04/07

UK dairy producers will now have access to the most advanced and extensive ‘breeding calculator' in the industry in the form of a new mating programme devised by Semex.

The newly launched Semex ‘PROMATE' breeding programme provides an extremely high level of inbreeding control with the facility to enter sire and maternal grandsire data into the system.

The PROMATE system utilises an extensive database of sires, from both Semex's own award-winning portfolio and also across the industry. By offering such an extended breeding pool, Semex advises that the programme will be key to enabling producers to enhance their genetic selections and improve herd longevity and performance. With individual producer requirements factored into the equation the system ensures highly accurate and personally tailored breeding recommendations.

“PROMATE is the most sophisticated, flexible and farmer-friendly system in the industry and promises to be a very important tool for progressive pedigree and commercial breeders,” said Andrew Axford, Semex Southern Sales Team Leader. “Its main strengths are that it reduces losses resulting from inbreeding as well as giving breeders the widest possible sire choice - enabling them to improve the traits they need for their business to prosper. It is also an incredibly straightforward system to use: Following an initial herd assessment by your fully trained Semex advisor, each cow's scores are entered into the PROMATE program to calculate a complete recommended sire report with various options, including lower-priced or high-fertility sires for cows that have proven difficult to get in calf.”

To ensure that producers – both Semex and non-Semex customers – have ready access to the new service, Semex has trained its entire team of regional breeding advisors in its use, which means they can respond quickly to customer enquiries and offer a fully accessible and efficient service. The service is free of charge to Semex UK customers.
