Blelack Elijah Retains All-Ireland Aberdeen Angus Championship Senior bull Blelack Elijah has clinched the Growvite All-Ireland Aberdeen Angus Championship for the second year in succession. The 2011 final was held at Bantry Show on the shores of the scenic Bantry Bay in west Cork. More than 50 entries travelled from throughout the north and south of Ireland to compete for a share of the 3,000 Euro prize fund.
Judge, Colin Hutchings who runs the Kingsbrompton herd in Somerset was impressed with the quality of the cattle in each class. “This is my first time judging in Ireland and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The tops in each class were fantastic and the cattle are a credit to the exhibitors who took part in this year’s final.” Mr Hutchings who runs 75 Aberdeen Angus cows described the overall champion as a tremendous bull and a clear winner on the day. “This is a big powerful bull and an outstanding example of the breed. He is a real gentleman with superb bone structure and super legs and feet. This bull simply oozes breed character.” The All-Ireland Championship title crowned another successful show season for the April 2007 Scottish-bred bull. Delighted owners Angela Armstrong McFadden, and husband Owen, run 50 pedigree cows in their Crerogue herd based at Navan in County Meath. They purchased the bull from Neil Massie OBE at Perth in February 2009 for 7,000gns. “We’ve had great fun on the show circuit over the last two years,” explained Angela Armstrong McFadden. Blelack Elijah travelled north in May to scoop the breed honours at Balmoral Show, and also took the supreme championship titles at Mullingar, Tullamore, Tinahely and Virginia. He was also interbreed champion at Virginia Show and the reserve interbreed award winner at Bantry Show. Runner-up for the prestigious All-Ireland Championship Trophy – a striking piece of silverware which dates back to 1902 – was Carrigroe D Lady Jane, a super cow with heifer calf at foot, shown by the brother and sister team of Sam and Sarah Matchett from Portadown, County Armagh. The Matchett family – Nigel, Gail, Sarah and Sam completed the 300 mile trip in nine hours. They had a successful trip to Bantry Show, scooping three first prize rosettes as well as the reserve senior and reserve supreme championship titles. Carrigroe D Lady Jane was purchased privately from John and Frank Appelbe, Clonakilty, County Cork. Born in October 2007, she is by Loughlynn Ace and bred from Carrigroe Lady Joue. This much-admired young cow won eight breed championships and three reserve interbreed titles on the Northern Ireland Show circuit this year. She was also crowned the 2011 Ulster Champion. The Birches prefix was established in 2008 when Sam Matchett was given a pedigree heifer for his 8th birthday. The herd currently comprises of 12 breeding females. “The reserve champion is a super family unit. She is strong and powerful and very feminine. This cow is doing her job and breeding well. She has a superb heifer calf at foot and is heavily in-calf with her second,” added the judge. The junior championship was won by Dr Michael and Martin Sheahan from Grange, Kilmallock, County Cork, with a super yearling heifer. The home-bred Luddenmore Ellen Erica is by Rawburn Rommel, and has been unbeaten in her class this year. She was overall champion at Cappamore Show and reserve female champion at Tullamore Show. Her dam, Elliot Erica was purchased privately in Scotland, and has won numerous championship titles. The Luddenmore prefix was founded in 2005 and currently consists of 25 cows. Herd numbers have been increasing rapidly due to an extensive embryo transfer programme using north Amercian and home-bred genetics. The Luddenmore herd is planning to host its first production sale in October 2012. Colin Hutchings added:”The junior champion has great potential and is certainly a great prospect for the future. She is an eye catching heifer and was superbly presented. This heifer wasn’t as fit as some of the others, but I don’t like to see young animals with too much brisket.” Claiming the reserve junior championship was Bunlahy General Blake, a November 2010 born Curzon Entertainer son brought out by Gerry Reynolds from Ballinlee, County Longford. The competitors were congratulated by sponsor Brendan Crowe of Univet/Tulivin based in County Cavan; and Irish Aberdeen Angus Association president, Joe Keville. Univet/Tulivin has been sole sponsor of the All-Ireland final since 1987. Brendan Crowe said:”We’ve had a long association with the All-Ireland Aberdeen Angus Championships. It’s been another interesting and enjoyable day with strong competition in all of the classes. Last year’s winner was victorious for a second year, and this is testimony to the quality and longevity of the Aberdeen Angus breed.
