Glendale Show 2011

The annual Glendale Show, held near Wooler in North Northumberland, was held on Bank Holiday Monday 29th August. The largest event of its kind in the region, the show attracts in the region of 14,000 visitors, with main ring entertainment, livestock classes, food, family and lifestyle displays and marquees, attracting people from across the North East and Scottish Borders.

This year, the livestock classes were well up and the new Livestock Points Competition, run for the first time at Glendale Show was won by Jimmy Elliott, of Branton East Side, near Powburn. He won the award for scoring the most points across all the entries in the livestock classes at the show. He also had the overall champion mule sheep.

The £250 prize was presented by sponsors Carrs Billington who presented Mr Elliott with his award during the show’s display of livestock in the Main Ring. The popular parade of livestock featured the return of Clydesdale Horses after an absence of many years, as well as relative newcomers to the farming scene – alpacas and Icelandic ponies.

Second place in the new competition went to Douglas and Ruth Allen from Stoophill, Alnwick, with third going to Andrew Walton, who is also Chief Livestock Steward at the Show.

Andrew was very pleased with the competition and its influence on the livestock classes at the show. “The competition has helped in overall livestock entries. It’s something fresh and new. We’ll definitely be doing it next year, as long as the sponsors are happy to do so. We’ve seen an increase in entries most sections. The standard was very good, across the board. The Texel and commercial sheep section was extremely impressive.”

It was a Texel which was champion sheep in the show’s interbreed show competition, show by Cameron Harrison, grandson of the owner, AH Harrison of Glanton. Fred Murray of Wrangham Farm, Lowick, won the Lilburn Estates Perpetual Challenge Trophy. He won the overall cattle championship with a Limousin calf, and the reserve championship with a Cow and Calf. A great supporter of the show, he brought a total of 5 cattle to the event.

Mr Murray is no stranger to the award: “I’ve won it six times since it first came out in 1994. I won it the first time it was awarded, and I won it last year. That’s the one you aim for. It’s been a very good show.

Andrew Walton, chief livestock steward added: “We had 14 cows and calves on show this year. For quality they were tremendous, especially the calves.”

The show included a large entry of goats, and with 42 classes, an exceptional equestrian section.

Equine Secretary Sandra Mansell was happy that in spite of poor summer weather and rising fuel costs there was a very good turnout, with entries only slightly lower than last year.

Rachael Smith is Glendale’s Show Secretary and is pleased with the numbers of visitors in 2011. “If we haven’t got the same gate as last year – 15,000 – we can’t have been far behind it. We’re extremely pleased with the gates because two mornings ago we were rescuing marquees out of hedges. But today it’s been fair all day and the sun has shone in the afternoon. The most magnificent thing for me was the grand parade of livestock. I really wanted that to be the centrepiece in the main ring. The points completion went extremely well.”
