Points Means Prizes for Livestock at Glendale Show

The Glendale Show is one of the foremost livestock shows in Northumberland, and each year it attracts hundreds of sheep, goats and cattle to take part in over 70 different show classes. This year for the first time, there is a Livestock Points Competition. Initiated by agricultural suppliers Carrs Billington it awards £250 to the person who amasses the greatest number of points overall.

Points will be allocated throughout the day for 1st to 3rd placings in all sheep and cattle classes with 3 points for a 1st place, 2 for a 2nd and 1 for a 3rd place. The winner will be announced after all classes have been judged and will be presented with their prize money in the main ring during the Grand Parade of Livestock. (In the event of a tie the prize money will be split.)

This is the first year that Carrs Billington have had a base in Glendale and Branch Manager Mark Tasker Brown gives us some background to the competition:

“We are a local company servicing the rural community and therefore we felt that it was important to support our local agricultural show. Livestock is at the very heart of Glendale and we hope that by running the Carrs Billington Livestock Points Competition, we can encourage even more people to show their livestock this year.”

Glendale Show currently attracts sheep, goat and cattle entries from across Northumberland and The Borders. There are over 70 classes, including pedigree and commercial classes which include the native Cheviot and Black Faced Sheep as well as continental breeds such as Zwartble. The Cattle classes include Commercial Cow and Calf Classes and Pure Bred Cow and Calf Classes.

Chief Livestock Steward Andrew Walton reiterates the importance of Livestock to The Glendale Show “By offering such a large selection of classes, we aim to provide as wide a platform as possible for both commercial and pedigree stock. In recent years, the numbers of livestock shown has started to increase following the lows of foot and mouth and blue tongue so through this competition we hope to increase the number of entries and continue to increase the standard of competition. This is yet another first for Glendale Show and we are thoroughly indebted to Carrs Billington for their support.”

He continues “Over the past hundred years, livestock has always been the centre piece of the show and thanks to the support of businesses such as Carrs Billington and the individual class sponsors including the NFU Mutual, Border Livestock Exchange and John Swan Ltd this will continue to be the case long into the future.”
