Red Ladies Limousin Trade Peaks at 14,000gns
2010-12-20

Whinfellpark Ena, a March 2009 born heifer from Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor, Penrith, Cumbria made 14,000gns and led the trade at the British Limousin Cattle Society’s end of year Red Ladies Derby at Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Friday 17th December 2010.

Earlier in the day the heifer had secured the pre-sale show Overall Supreme Championship from the judge Mr Brian Wills, Newhouse of Glamis, Forfar. Whinfellpark Ena is by the herd’s noted sire Goldies Terence and is out of the fifteen year old cow Ryedale Limelight, a Rachels Hamlet daughter. With a huge Beef Value of LM+52, Whinfellpark Ena was sold PD’d in calf to the 50,000gns Wilodge Cerberus. Purchasing the Champion was Mr H Emslie for the Emslies pedigree herd at Kinknockie, Mintlaw, Peterhead, Aberdeenshire.

The 14,000gns bid represented the top price to date as well as the first ever Sale Championship for the 125-strong Whinfellpark pedigree herd, topping their previous best - the 9,000gns Whinfellpark Clover sold at the corresponding sale in 2009. A strong day for the Whinfellpark herd was confirmed when Whinfellpark Fanzine later led the Weaned Calf Sale at 9,000gns.

The Reserve Champion, Lourie Dazzle, took the second leading price at 6,500gns for Robert Aitken, Hillside, Balrymonth, St Andrews, Fife. This was only the second outing at Red Ladies for Mr Aitken’s Lourie Herd which was established in 2002 and numbers 8 pedigree Limousin females. The February 2008 born Lourie Dazzle is by the AI sire, Ionesco, and out of Lourie Vessa, a daughter of the herd’s foundation cow, Craigie Ribena. She had previously stood Champion at Fife Show and Kirriemuir Show respectively and was also third in her class at this year’s Royal Highland. Purchasing the Reserve Champion were GJ Lee & CM Lloyd for their newly establishing Calogale prefix at Ger-Y-Coed, Four Roads, Kidwelly, Carms. Commenting, Gareth Lee said: “We’re delighted with our purchase and are planning to calve her down, flush her and put her back in calf to Wilodge Cerberus.” Lourie Dazzle will join three bulling heifers recently purchased from the Goldies, Cowin and Fflur herds respectively.

Glangwden Eureka at 5,500gns was the day’s third top price on behalf of CL & FE Jerman, Glangwden, Trefeglwys, Caersws, Powys. Snapping up this one for their Widdrington prefix were H Annett & Son, Widdrington Farm, Morpeth, Northumberland. Carrying a Beef Value of LM+35, Eureka is by the 42,000gns Haltcliffe Ullswater and out of Glangwden Ufleur, a daughter of Paul, a Jacot son. Messrs Annett later bought the 3,800gns first prize winner, Nebo Emma, a Milbrook Tanko daughter brought out by ML Thomas, Bryn Farm, Nebo, Llanrwst, Conwy.

Two heifers made 4,500gns apiece. Francis Partners, Penllwyn, Llanfyllin, Powys bid this sum for Whinfellpark Edna, a daughter of Rafiot and out of Middledale Shirley. The red ticket-winning Edna was purchased with a Beef Value of LM+40 and was sold in calf to Wilodge Cerberus. Consigned by Mr & Mrs J&A Callion, 6 Skreen Rd, Shaneragh, Dromore, Co Tyrone, Echo is by Rossignol and out of Sarkley Tarriane, sister of the 28,000gns Sarkley Arriane.
