Welsh Black Bull Sells for 4,000gns at Dolgella

The only bull at The Welsh Black Cattle Society’s sale, held on Tuesday 2 November at Dolgellau, was Tryfil Caledfwlch which was sold for 4,000gns. Bred and sold by Mr Ioan Roberts, Tryfil Isaf, Llanerchymedd, Ynys Mon, the 2½ year old bull, sired by Neuadd Hebog 151st (Vol 91) and out of Waedog Eluned 20th (Vol 92), was bought by Messrs DM & J Thomas, Cwmhyar, Tregroes, Llandysul, Ceredigion.

In the female section the Hafodyresgob bloodlines fetched the highest price in the in-calf heifer and maiden heifer classes. Champion Female in the pre-sale show ring Hafodesgob Branwen 61st (Vol 97) fetched the highest price of 2,400gns. The 2½ year old in-calf heifer, served by Gerddi Bluog Addewid 2nd, was bred and sold by Mrs Gwenfair Jones & Sons, Hafod-yr-Esgob Isaf, Bala. The heifer was sired by Llwynsarn Cawr (Vol 90) and out of Hafodesgob Branwen 52nd (Vol 93). Purchasing the Champion Female was Lleyn Leisure and Rural Services, Bodrydd, Rhoshirwaen, Pwllheli.

At 2,250gns Hafodesgob Teleri 8th (Vol 98), a 16 month old maiden heifer from the Jones family, was sold to Peter and Ann Moss, Ewebank Farm, Rokeby, Barnard Castle, Co. Durham. The maiden heifer was sired by Graig-Goch Berwyn 59th (Vol 96) and out of Harodesgob Teleri 4th (Vol 88).

The Champion Maiden Heifer Graig-Goch Marian 44th (Vol 97), bred and sold by Mr Emyr Jones of Graig Goch, Nebo, Llanrwst, sold for 1,580gns to Mr Trevor Shanklin, Cwmparc, Llawhaden, Narberth, Pembrokeshire. The prize winning heifer was sired by Machreth Cai 7th (AI) (Vol 88) and out of Graig-Goch Marian 31st (Vol 91).

Selling for 1,550gns was Brysgaga Menna 64th (Vol 97). The 27 month old in-calf heifer, sired by Gwern-Cynyddion Erddyn 2nd (Vol 95) and out of Brysgaga Menna 53rd (Vol 94), was bred and sold by Mr Rowland Rees of Brysgaga, Bow Street, Ceredigion. The heifer was bought by Mr Mike Parry Jones, Bryn Moel, Garndolbenmaen, Gwynedd.

The 2nd Prize winner to the Champion Female, in the pre-sale show ring, was Ysguboriau Dwynwen 110th (Vol 97) which was sold for 1,500gns. The heifer was sired by Machreth Banner 7th (Vol 95) and out of Ysguboriau Dwynwen 100th (Vol 94). Bred and sold by Mr William R Jones, Ysguboriau, Tywyn the in-calf heifer was bought by Messrs Beardmore, New Hall Farm, Bronnington, Whitchurch in Salop.

Rhys Angharad 14th (Vol 97), another in-calf heifer, was also sold for 1,500gns. The heifer was bred and sold by Mr Mike Parry-Jones, Bryn Moel, Garndolbenmaen and bought by Messrs VP Kelly, Graig Fach, Gaerwen, Anglesey.

The highest priced cow with calf at-heel was Nantrhys Peryg 4th (Vol 95). The 3½ year old cow was bred by Mr &Mrs Dai Jones, Llanilar and sold by Mr Lloyd Roberts, Waterloo Service Station, Pentrefail, Cross Roads, Abergele. The cow was sold with her heifer calf at-heel for 1,300gns, and had been running with the bull Nantrhys Hebog (Vol 96) since June 2010. Purchasing the potential package of 3 was Messrs Beardmore from Whitchurch, Salop.

The highest priced heifer, in the weaned heifer class, was Caerynwch Gladys 63rd (Vol 99). The 6 month old heifer, sired by Caerynwch Baron 9th (Vol 96) and out of Caerynwch Gladys 49th (Vol 94), was sold for 700gns. The heifer was bred and sold by Mr TW Williams, Caerynwch Farm, Dolgellau and bought by Mr J Jones, Bonc, Nantyr, Llangollen, Denbighshire.

1 Female over 3 years of age was sold for 1,300gns
35 females 2-3 years old averaged 1,066gns
18 maidens 1-2 years old averaged 785gns
6 heifers under 12 months of age averaged 540gns
1 bull sold for 4,000gns

A total of 61 animals sold averaging 983gns/head

A steady trade was reported at the sale with definite interest for in-calf heifers and those animals likely to produce a return within a year.
