Dozens of careers involving working in the countryside will be showcased to young people at the Great Yorkshire Showground next month.

“Careers in the Countryside” is run by the Yorkshire Agricultural Society best known as the organiser of the annual farming showcase, the Great Yorkshire Show.

This will be the fourth year of the event, which takes place on Tuesday 12 October, and is aimed specifically at secondary school pupils.   Representatives from a wide range of professions – everything from horse racing, to game keeping to veterinary work - will be showcased. In addition a number of the region’s agricultural colleges will be present to talk about the different rurally based courses on offer.

Nigel Pulling, Chief Executive said: “This event provides a great opportunity to show young people the vast range of careers available in the rural sector. Our aim is to ensure they are aware of these and at the very least factor them in when making their career decisions. Young people are obviously the future of the industry and it’s vital that we raise awareness of countryside career options.”

Last year around 1,000 youngsters attended the event, and similar numbers are expected in October. It is anticipated that some 80 or so businesses will attend and the day will include workshops and lectures, presentations and also a mock livestock auction.
