2010-02-02

Beef and sheep farmers should set annual performance targets for their enterprise at the start of each year to drive their business forward, according to EBLEX.

By taking stock of exactly where they are, reviewing their performance over the past 12 months and identifying key areas for improvement, producers can plan for steady business growth.Chris Lloyd, EBLEX Industry Development Manager, said: “Our annual business costings guide - Business Pointers - highlights significant net margin differences between average and top third performing businesses in both the beef and sheep sectors, showing that some producers have considerable potential for improvement.

“The figures clearly demonstrate that the best results are achieved through a combination of physical performance and cost control, however it can be difficult for producers to make their own benchmarking comparisons and set targets for the year ahead due to the level of detail involved.

“The Enterprise MOT offers a solution to this, giving a simple, individual annual assessment for some basic performance factors which can be used as the basis for improvement planning.”

The assessment uses the EBLEX Snapshot Bronze tool to give clear ‘traffic light’ signals on key performance indicators using basic farm information.

The Enterprise MOT is available free of charge to every member of the Beef and Sheep Better Returns Programme. English levy payers who are not yet members of the programme can register for free by e-mailing brp@eblex.org.uk or by calling 0870 241 8829.
