Longtown Primestock Sale

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 53 prime cattle, 9 over thirty month cattle, 5,258 prime lambs and 6,084 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 13th August, 2009.

Clean cattle were dearer, selling to a top of 185.5p for Limousin bullocks from A. & W.J. Taylor & Son, Dashwellgreen, others 183.5p and 180.5p Hallburn, 177.5p Houghton House. British Blue heifers from Hallburn to 183.5p

A small show of Over Thirty Month cattle were short of requirements and dearer. Limousin cows to 112.5p Morley Hill, 103.5p Hilltop; British Blue 109.5p Greensburn.

A large quality show of 5,258 prime lambs met a fast trade with an overall average of 155p. Top price per head of £83.80 for Texels from A.R. Bell, Kirkton, Hawick and to 201p per kilo for Beltex’s from G. Mitchinson & Sons, Gallowberry, Kirkcambeck, Brampton, other Texels £81.50 Chapel House, £79.80 Clement Leazes; Suffolk £78.50 Demesne, £77.80 High Dovecote, £76.50 Kirkend; Beltex £76.50 Gallowberry; Shropshires £75.50 Midtodholes; Charollais £73.50 Faugh Beeches, £70 Meinfoot; Bleu d’Maine £69.50 Solwaybank; Greyface £67.80 Broughton Mains, £62.80 Crowhall, £62.20 Glenlea; Rouge £64.80 Middle Farm; Half Bred £61 High Moat; Blackface £60.80 Chapel House, £57.50 Edges Green; Cheviot Mule £59.20 Skelfhill; North Country Cheviot £59.20 Effgill.

Lightweight lambs were another good entry and a strong demand to average 156.7p overall.
