Longtown Primestock Sale

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 52 prime cattle, 4 young bulls, 18 OTM cattle, 4529 prime hoggs, 147 prime lambs and 3215 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 14th May, 2009.

Prime cattle again met a fast selling trade, selling to a top of 183.5p for a Limousin bullock from JC & D Nicholson, The Gill, others to 178.5p The Gill, 175.5p Dashwellgreen, 170.5p Toppin Castle; Charolais 161.5p Fenton.

Limousin heifers 180.5p, 172.5p Toppin Castle, 169.5p Dashwellgreen & Toppin Castle; Charolais 162.5p Dashwellgreen.

Friesian bulls to 140p, 138p Harelawhole.

All classes of OTM met a good selling trade with prices peaking at 129.5p for a Charolais cows form Messrs Bloxham, Linbridgeford, others to 127.5p from the same home; Limousin 127.5p Ladyhousesteads, 125.5p Sceughdyke, 122.5p Ladyhousesteads; Devon 123.5p Sceughdyke; Friesian 122.5p Bleatarn, 115.5p, 105.5p Stubbyknowe.

A larger show of prime lambs sold beyond vendors expectations to average 214.7p overall. With more abattoirs now switched over to spring lambs more numbers are required to meet increasing demand. Top was £96.80 for Suffolks from Barrockend with top price per kilo 226p for Texels from Glenzierfoot.

A mixed show of prime hoggs were forward to the usual ringside of buyers. The best well finished export hoggs regularly sold between 195-210p per kilo with an overall average of 178.6p being achieved.

The 3123 hoggs over 36kg averaged 181.3p with the 1406 under 36kg averaging 167.9p. Top price per head was £101 for Texels from Bloan Farm with top price per kilo going to Easthouse at 215p for Texels.
