Longtown Primestock Sale

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 72 prime cattle, 1 young bulls, 34 OTM cattle, 3,540 prime lambs and 4,924 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 16th October, 2008.

In the prime cattle section the quality was poorer with trade cheaper on the week. Top was 170.5p for a Limousin heifer from Messrs Blaylock, Hallburn and purchased by M J Wharton, Butcher, Wigton, others to 162.5p Dykehead, 160.5p Upper Mains, 159.5p Greystoke Castle & Brydekirk Mains. Charolais £160.5p Dykehead, 152.5p Hallburn, 149.5p Upper Tinwasld; Blondes 158.5p, 145.5p Brisco Hill.

Limousin bullocks 162.5p Houghton House, 157.5p Swaites, 156.5p Hallees, 155.5p Bleatarn; Charolais 149.5p, 144.5p Spoutbank; Angus 149.5p, 142.5p Smallholms; Belgian Blues 149.5p Netheronsett.

The OTMs saw trade a little easier, selling to 125.5p, 116.5p for Angus heifers from Messrs Tinning, Burnfoot On Esk; Angus cows 116.5p Burnfoot on Esk, 91.5p Barnglies; Charolais 113.5p Sceughdyke; Limousin 105.5p Sceughdyke, 97.5p Snab, 90.5p Greystoke Castle, 83.5p Snab; Friesians 95.5p, 92.5p, 91.5p Chapeltown, 87.5p East Scales, 86.5p Sandbed. Limousin bulls 109.5p Summerhill, 97.5p Garthhead. Top price per head was £908 for a Charolais cow from Sceughdyke.

The Company had forward a much smaller show of prime lambs owing to standstills and a dipping trade during the week. However the usual ring of buyers saw the lambs average out at the same as last week at 118.3p. The 2,717 lambs over 36 kilos averaged 119.1p with the 821 lambs under 36 kilos averaging 114.7p. The sale was topped at £68.80 for Texel lambs from AR Bell, Kirkton, Hawick and to 160p for lambs from the same home.

The cast ewes and rams were again a smaller show on the week. The heavy ewes remained a similar trade with the hill ewes much better on the week.
