Annual Prize Show and sale of Individual Swaledale Ewes and Flock Books

Mr J Richardson of W Richardson & Son, Vendor, Mrs Jean Fowler, Sponsor and Mr Adrian Bell, Sponsor along with the Champion.

On Wednesday 2nd March 2005  at Kirkby Stephen Mart in Cumbria,  Harrison & Hetherington Ltd conducted the Annual Prize Show and Sale of 79 individual ewes, scanned in lamb, gimmer hoggs also 220 Swaledale Flock Books and Shepherds Guides on behalf of the Swaledale Sheep Breeders Association. 

The Show sponsored by Adrian Bell, Livestock Scanner, Pye Bibby Agriculture and Jean Fowler, Sculpter wad judged by S Hunter, Hardraw, G A Thompson, Howburn with R Peirson, Friars House, Referee. 

Awards:

Class 1 - Ewe

1st - W Richardson & Son, Ghyll House - £2,500 to J Ireland & Son

2nd - Exors C Harker, Briar Dene - £600 to A & L Fawbert

3rd - R Marwood & Son, Long Green - £1,400 to L G Sibson

4th - R Hutchinson & Son, Valley Farm - £1,300 to D J Hanson

Class 2 - Shearling Ewe

1st - W Richardson & Son, Ghyll House - £3,000 to C Lowis

2nd - M Marwood & Son, Long Green - £1,800 to L G Sibson

3rd - R A Sowerby, Thwaite Bridge - £400 to Breck House Enterprises

4th - R A Sowerby, Thwaite Bridge - £1,100 to G L Hutton

Class 3 - Gimmer Hogg

1st - R Hutchinson & Son, Valley Farm - £700 to D J Hanson

Numbers forward were greatly restricted by the adverse weather conditions.  The overall average for 31 sheep sold rose on the year by £36.33 to £804.51, Ewes averaged £743.63, Shearlings £918.57 and Hoggs £650. 

Flock Books averaged £36.30 a rise of £13.55, highlighted by a volume 1 book selling at £1,400 and a volume 2 book making £1,000.

Ewes:  £2,500 Ghyll House; £1,400 Long Green; £1,300 Valley Farm; £600 Briar Dene. 

Gimmer Shearlings: £3,000 Ghyll House; £2,000, £1,600, £650 Mossdale Farms; £1,800 Long Green; £1,100 Thwaite Bridge; £800 Mossdale Farm. 

Gimmer Hoggs:  £1,100 Buddle House; £1,000 Little Ings; £700 Valley Farm; £500 (2) Long Green. 

Swaledale Flock Books:
