Holstein Winter Classic winners
08/02/05

The Ingleview herd of R& E Butterfield, Linghaw, Bentham, Lancaster have won the major prize in the Border & Lakeland Holstein Club's Winter Holstein Classic competition.

The herd also took the title of Premier Herd 2004 in HUK national competition which was awarded at the Dairy Event.

The Boustead Memorial Trophy, for the Best 10 Cows, was awarded to Robert Butterfield, by Rob Wharton of sponsors Dodd & Co Chartered Accountants, at the Club's annual dinner dance.

The 10 winning cows were all exhibitor bred second and third calvers, including five second calvers all scored 89 points and an 88 point two year old that had just calved her second calf and not yet reclassified. Eight of the ten had already been champions in their own right at shows or in classes within herd competitions.

The Winter Holstein Classic is the Border & Lakeland Holstein Club's winter competition, which was ably judged by Mr. David Inman of Strickland Hill, Witherslack, Grange Over Sands. Mr Inman stepped in to judge the competition at 24 hours notice when it became clear that Ashley Flemming would be unable to get to the area from Northern Ireland due to the storms. Ten members of the Club put cattle forward, and the standard was extremely high.

Speaking at the presentation dinner Mr. Inman said that it had been an honour to judge the competition at such short notice, and that although it had been a relatively small competition it had been one of the most difficult he had ever had to judge. He went on to add that the standard of the groups of ten had been exceptional and the competition had been very close, with any one of the top five herds being possible winners.
