Carlisle Suffolk Sheep Sale Success
19/08/08

A top price of 5,000gns and sale average of close to £500 was achieved amid strong commercial and breeder interest for Suffolks at the Society’s first sale at the Borderway Mart, Carlisle.

Show champion and top price of 5,000gns at Carlisle, Jimmy Douglas's Cairness ram lamb

While it was Jimmy Douglas of Cairness, whose supreme champion and first prize ram lamb, took the top price; Cairness breeding also ranked high throughout the show and sale. The top price ram lamb, by Cairness Just the Best, out of a dam by Crosemanor Commandeur, described as the biggest and strongest ewe ever seen was knocked down to Gordon MacKie, of Drimme, Rescobie by Forfar.

Reserve champion went to return breeder Sandy Fraser of County Turf, and his new Hazeltree flock. This was for a shearling ram by Cairness Attitude out of a dam by Cairness Muskateer. The shearling, which was one of triplets, sold to R P Watson, of Roosecote Farm, Barrow in Furness for 720gns.

Second highest price of 1,100gns went to Hazel Martindale of Landale, Lockerbie, and her ram lamb by Cairness First Flight, sold to W H Clubley and Son of Driffield, Yorkshire.

Third highest price of 900gns went to James Brown and Others of the Arran flock Northumberland, their lamb by Conveth Carnoustie carried an index of £2.59 and was sold to H M P Wymott of Lancashire.

Auctioneers Harrison and Hetherington reported: “There was a very good atmosphere with strong interest in Suffolks from prominent breeders and commercial buyers. We achieved more than 70% clearance on the ram lambs and 85% on shearlings.

Society chairman, Michael Weaver said: “Consignments were going far and wide, to Durham, Dumfriesshire, Lancashire and buyers were particularly strong from Wales. Without doubt selling in a bluetongue clear zone was a positive factor. This is the first Society sale at Carlisle and bodes well for the future.”
