Austria is one of the countries in Europe richest in forests. 47 % of the Federal territory (3,924.000 ha) are covered with forests. Approximately 10% of farm land is cultivated according to organic criteria. The average size of an Austrian organic farm is just 14 hectares of farm land. |

Austria has always promoted ecological and extensive cultivation based on her socio-ecological agricultural policy. Since Austria's accession to the EU, existing agri-ecological subsidisation programmes in agriculture have been developed further within the framework of the environmental programme. |
