C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 24 cattle, 3,164 prime lambs and 5,897 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 14th September 2017.

A total of 18 cattle was forward and a shortage of better quality beef cows. Trade was brisk and could easily have sold many more. The sale topped at 158p for a Limousin cow sold by A&A Ewing, Dumbretton. Angus cows sold to 140p from TN Cavers, Sorbie, with Messrs Cavers also selling the top price per head of £1,059.75. Black and white cows sold to 123p or £904.05 from CT & J Wigham, Hethermill. Cast bulls peaked at 128p for a Galloway from A Murray & Sons, Sewing Shields, grossing £1,036.80.

Prime bulls sold to 224p for a black Limousin bull from JW Vevers, High Stenries and others to 210p also from Messrs Vevers.

A larger show of 3,164 prime lambs were forward to the usual ring of buyers and realised a steady trade throughout, on par with the rest of the week. A lot of lambs coming forward between 36-40kg lacking flash and would be better marketed as stores. Vendors benefited with heavier lambs over 42kg, with plenty flesh. The best quality export lambs remained a good trade, with a much smaller show of lightweight lambs similar on the week.

Sale topped at 228p for tremendous Beltex from regular consignor Messrs Gribbon, Waterside, Dumfries. Top price per head of £103 for Texel lambs from Messrs Grice, Newtown, Brampton. Overall sale average 170.0p (SQQ 169.6p).

A much larger show of 5,897 cast ewes and rams attracted the usual full ring of buyers, with all classes being £3-£4 up on the week. Heavy ewes very much in demand and scarce of requirements, with a large number of hill ewes realising recent rates. Rams still sought after.

Sale topped at £195 for a pair of excellent Texel rams from Messrs Bell, Roxburghmill, Kelso. Ewes to £144 for a pen of quality Texel ewes from Messrs Gibb, Toftcombs, Biggar.
