C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 33 cattle, 5,317 prime hoggs and 4,556 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 5th January 2017.

The company held its weekly sale where an entry of 33 prime cattle and OTM’s were forward. Eight buyers were at ringside who all wanted cattle and were prepared to bid for them.

An excellent quality show of 26 cows and 1 stock bull were easily handled by the buyer’s strength at ringside, and double the entry could be sold. Charles Lee sold a tremendous load of cows topping the sale at 161p with a Simmental x. Charolais x from the same home realised 125p. Harry and Geoff Gass sold a Limousin x to 140p with a Blonde x to 129p. A tank of an Angus cow from Archbank sold to 106p, with Galloways to 100p from Langholm Farms. Top price per head was £1,102.85 from Morley Hill, followed at £1,001.50 from Nunscleugh and with native breeds to £837.40 from Archbank. The stock bull from Morley Hill found fierce bidding from all corners of the ring and was finally knocked down to the farmers friend, grossing £1,360.

A small entry of clean cattle topped at 218p for a Charolais x heifer from John and Lindsay Vevers, with the whole entry averaging 215.50p per kilo @ 56.5%, killing out at 381.50p per kilo deadweight.

Another grand show of 5,317 prime hoggs were forward for sale to the usual busy ring of buyers. All classes sharper on the week especially export and lightweight hoggs, which saw averages rise 5-7p on the week. Heavyweight hoggs also realising more per head which in turn resulted in an overall average of 175p with an SQQ of 181p. The sale topped at 268p for a pen of oustanding Beltex hoggs from Messrs Nixon, Oakwood and top price per head of £110 and £104 for Texels from Messrs Dean, Kirk House.

Another good show of 4,556 cast ewes and rams was presented to the usual ring of buyers. Heavyweight ewes remain dear although a much larger show of horned ewes saw trade £2-3 easier on the wee, unless strong with a bit of weight. Rams realised recent high rates. Sale topped at £148 for Texel ewes from Messrs Douglas, Catslackburn and Mr Gunn, Shop Farm, Caithness.
