Holstein Bulls to 2,020gns at Kilrea Mart

A small entry of bulls peaked at 2,020gns at Holstein NI’s autumn show and sale, hosted by HA McIlrath and Sons Ltd at Kilrea Mart on Tuesday 6th October 2015.

Sale leader was the day’s honourable mention award winner Majestic La Ron PLI £393, consigned by the father and son team of Ian and Kenny Watson, Macosquin, Coleraine. This fifteen-month-old entry was sired by the high genomic Ladys Manor Graf La-Bron, and is bred from the VG85 Majestic Gerard Licorice who averaged over 9,500kgs at 3.69% butterfat and 3.18% protein in two 305-day lactations. Three generations of this family have bulls in AI. Buyer was W McCormick, Ballycastle.

Next best at 1,700gns was the third prize winning Drumeil Goldie PLI £127 bred by Aiden McAfee, Aghadowey. Sired by Golden PP Red, this yearling entry was bred from Riverdown V Showman Delicat VG85 (2yr) who gave over 10,700kgs at 3.54% butterfat and 3.20% protein in her first 305-day lactation. This polled entry sold to Mr Whiteside.

The pre-sale show was judged by Andrew Kennedy from Ballymena, and generously sponsored by Semex.

Claiming the supreme championship award was the McLean family’s Relough Mask PLI £388, a fourteen-month-old Welcome Armitage Pesky ET son, out of a home-bred VG86 Scientific Destry daughter. He sold at 1,300gns to William Hanna.

“The champion was an eye catching bull with a level top, and sound legs and feet, “ explained the judge.

Runner-up was Prehen Ellesmere ET PLI £197, a seventeen-month-old Crackholm Fever ET son bred by club chairman Stuart Smith, and father Robbie, from Londonderry. This bull is backed by seven generations of EX dams, and is a full brother to the 8,050gns Pavime Elisha ET. He failed to meet his reserve and returned home unsold.

Semex area manager John Berry congratulated the winners and presented the awards.
