C & D Auction Marts Limited had forward 18 prime cattle, 8 young bulls, 32 OTM cattle, 4,774 prime lambs and 6,587 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 17th September 2015.

The auctioneer asked for more cows and you obliged. 32 penned and all buyers bidding freely for all types. Several pens of cows were beginning to show the weather but saying that all types were wanted. Top price of 153p was paid for a Limousin x cow from Messrs Ewing, Dumbretton, other Limousin sold to 125p from Messrs Dixon, Upperburnmouth, Montbeliarde cross from the same realised 122p. Stuart Fisher topped the native breeds with a homebred Angus at 129p. Dairy x Angus sold to 117p High Greenhill. British Blue x sold to 121p from The Throp, while Simmental x sucklers realised 118p from Messrs Dinwoodie, Archerbeck. OTM Ayrshire bulls sold to 66p from Campbeltown.

Top price per head was £1,201.05 from Dumbretton Farms, Angus to £902.75 Kimmeter Green Cottage, others to £831.40 Bush of Ewes and Simmental to £802.40 Archerbeck.

Less prime cattle on offer due to standstills but trade maintained late high rates. The sale was topped at 223.5p for a Limousin bullock sold by A. & W.J. Taylor & Son, Dashwell Green, others to 222.5p also from Dashwell Green and both cattle were purchased by Border Meats, Butchers, Lockerbie. Top price per head was £1,486.80 for a Limousin heifer shown by J. & N. Beattie, Woodfield.

A much larger show of 4,774 prime lambs were forward to the usual ring of buyers. Export lambs were a lot sharper on the week with best quality sheep in demand. Heavier lambs slightly easier but still sold well. Lightweight lambs sold at recent rates. Overall average of 153.3p (SQQ 155.3p).

Top price of £90 per head for Texels from Old Wall and to 212p per kilo for Beltex from Gelston Castle.
