The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart plc had forward 34 prime cattle, 6 OTM cattle, 2,463 prime lambs and 5,169 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 13th August 2015.

Another good show of prime cattle presented to a full ringside of 9 bidders for 34 cattle, many more needed to satisfy the ever growing demand. Trade was every bit as dear and sold to 234.5p for a sweet Limousin heifer sold by W. & W. Faulder, Houghton House, and purchased by Ballard Butchers, Castle Douglas. Next in line was 229.5p also from Messrs Faulder, selling to M.J. Wharton, Wholesale Butchers, Wigton. Limousin bullocks topped at 228.5p shown by D.J. Garthwaite & Son, Wyseby Hill Cottage, bought by W. Kirkup & Sons, Butchers, Longtown.

A very short entry of cast cows due to the farmers working among grass. Top price of 120p per kilo for an aged suckler cow from Messrs Tinning. Top price per head of £1,032 for a British Blue cross from Metal Bridge. Holsteins sold to 80p from Stubbyknowe. More cows are needed to meet buyers demand.

Saddlery

A smaller show of 2,463 prime lambs was seen due to most farmers taking advantage of the great weather conditions, the overall sale average of 148.1p/kg (SQQ 149.1p) was similar to most other centres this week. Best quality lambs sold to a premium and well in excess of vendors expectations. Top price of £86 per head for Texels from Old Wall and to 186p per kilo for Texels from Thornthwaite Close.

Another large show of 5,169 cast ewes and rams were forward to the usual full ring of buyers. Ewes remain easily sold, although averages would be £3-£4 less on the week.
