10am Ring 2 - Shearling Rams (Lots 1063 – 1490)

The Beltex breed arrived in the UK from Belgium when they were imported to the UK in 1989. With their double-muscle traits they brought a totally new dimension to British lamb production. When the sale first took place at Borderway 20 years ago the catalogue entries stood at 240, and as an indication of the popularity of the breed this is a record breaking sale with the 1490 entries.

Speaking in advance of the sale, John Barclay, current Chairman of the Beltex Sheep Society said: “It is 25 years since the society was established, so this sale is a major milestone in more ways than one, with the largest numbers of entries that we have ever seen.

“We put the dramatic increase in numbers down to the incredible success of the breed; the fabulous quality and the premium that the Beltex cross lambs are achieving in both the live and the dead weight markets. We are seeing interest and members growing year on year and I think the future of the breed can only go forward.

“Most of our new members are young members and they realise the financial opportunities of utilising the Beltex breed. This will stand the society in very good stead for the future.”

Harrison and Hetherington operate seven auction marts across the North of England and Scottish Borders, and complete pedigree sales on behalf of most of the major UK Breed Societies. The Beltex Sales are now their largest pedigree sale of the year.

Commenting, David Pritchard, Operations Director for Harrison and Hetherington said:
“Year on year this sale has grown, along with the popularity of the breed. It has been a privilege to be part of the Beltex breed’s success and on behalf of everyone here at Harrison and Hetherington, I would like to congratulate them on reaching their 25th anniversary and offer them our very best wishes for the future.

The August show is the Society’s main event for selling Beltex in the UK. The Beltex produce a very high quality commercial lamb and their trait of being early finishes, resulting in them being a highly sought after breed by commercial sheep farmers.”
