Keelham Farm Shop Snaps Up the Champion at Skipton

Keelham Farm Shop secured both champion and reserve at Skipton Auction Mart’s April Prime Cattle show this week. (Mon April 7). The shop, from Thornton, Bradford, aims to open its second farm shop in Gargrave Road, Skipton, this autumn, and maintained its strong support with yet another championship-winning Skipton acquisition.

The champion was a 570kg British Blue Steer, for TW&IM Fawcett of Long Preston, picked out by judge James Dewhirst of Winterburn, which made top price on the day of 264.6p/kg or £1,508.

The reserve, a good 525kg Limousin cross Steer from Simon Bennett also joined Keelham farm Shop for 251.5p/kg or £1,320.

Mr Bennett, of Delph Farm, Silsden, Moor, landed a notable championship and reserve championship double at the Skipton prime cattle show last month.

Mr Fawcett also picked up first and second place for his Limousin cross heifers, which sold for £1,013 and £833.70 to Dick Binns, a butcher from Shipley.

A total of 46 prime cattle were put forward, with five clean cattle under 30 months, three clean cattle over 30 months, and 38 cast cattle.

Prime cattle over 30 months sold for an average of £571.58 per head, with PR & HJ Marginson of Higham making top price of £647.

Trade for cast cattle was down on the previous month, with an overall cull cow selling average of £796.82 per head, or 113.99p/kg.

G&MA Lawn, of Skipton, picked up first prize in the beef cows show class, and got top price for an Aberdeen Angus with £1,157, and the highest price per kg with 166.5p, but the top priced cow was from MD Farms, from Clapham, for a Charolais which sold for £1,211.

AV Bailey, of Eldroth, who came second in the beef show, got £1,181 for his Charolais, with a higher price per kg of 148.5p. J&R Cockerill, from Rawtenstall, sold a Blonde cast bull for £1,461.
