Pickles Family Repeat Coup at Craven Feather Auctions

Poultry breeder Richard Pickles again ruled the roost when exhibiting the champion trio of Large White Wyandottes at the annual Craven Feather Auctions Spring show and sale of poultry and waterfowl at Skipton Auction Mart. (Sat, March 15)

Mr Pickles, of Bent Laithe Farm, Lothersdale, was repeating his title-winning success at last year’s corresponding fixture. Regularly among the prizes at the Skipton poultry highlight, he was winning his third Craven Feather Auctions championship and is also a three times past reserve champion.

A motor mechanic by trade, Mr Pickles’ 2013-bred victors – a cockerel and two point-of-lay pullets – were from the same family responsible for the champion trio at this year’s Longridge Show and runners-up at the Northern Poultry Show in Hipperholme.

Poultry breeding is described as “a great family hobby” by Mr Pickles, with three generations – himself, his father Tom and 14-year-old daughter Selina, a pupil at South Craven School, Cross Hills – closely involved in their multiple show successes. They breed Large White Wyandottes primarily, along with Light Sussex bantams.

Their latest Skipton champions also headed the pecking order on price when selling for a joint top of £100, with the two other £100 achievers a trio of Silver Duckwing game from DF&A Wilkinson, of Silsden, and three call ducks from M Jackson, of Wiswell, Clitheroe.

Show judge Alan Parnaby, of Barnoldswick, awarded the reserve championship to the first prize trio of Welsummer bantams from C Wilson, of Burnley.

Forward were 209 lots of caged poultry, waterfowl and ducks, along with 167 lots of eggs and 53 items of associated equipment. Other leading prices were: Trio Silver Laced Wyandotte £85, Trio Blue Partridge Wyandotte £78, 3 Brown Leghorn £70, Trio Black Mottled Pekin £70, Trio Black Wyandotte £68, Trio Silver Duckwing game £65, 3 Khaki Campbell £65.
