Fantastic Trade for Hexham Store Cattle

Hexham & Northern Marts held their weekly sale of store cattle and suckled calves on Friday 10th January 2014 and offered a catalogued entry of 573 head of predominantly suckler bred cattle.

With two thirds of the entry made up of cattle over 18 months of age a great crowd of finishers assembled at the ringside for the start of the sale and a fantastic trade ensued.

Hexham Mart

The first four lots of cattle into the ring from two separate consignors were all heifers at 25 months or older and averaged over £1400 to peak at £1520 for a shapely lady by the Charolais sire and the dearest heifer of the day from Messrs Eggleston, Thornham Hill. Indeed it was the Charolais that reigned supreme over all other sires on this particular day with a tremendous show of strong steers and heifers presented to an eager ringside of buyers from near and far.

Steers peaked at an astonishing £1740 for a huge bullock at 20 months from noted Charolais cross producer Jimmy Walton, Flotterton who consigned 20 in total to average £1557 selling to only three regular purchasers from Northumberland, Cumbria and Yorkshire.

Heifers were also highly sought after and a consignment from the same ‘Rothbury’ area as Messrs Waltons bullocks were the 18 head presented by brothers and now highly regarded Hexham vendors Derek and Vincent Milburn, Holling Hill. Again all by the Charolais bull and at 18-22 months of age the cattle attracted frantic bidding to peak at £1380 and average a respectable £1260.

As winter presses on and fodder stores become depleted breeders and feeders attention is drawn to the potential values achievable at this centre for older, forward stores over one hundred of which at this sale alone sold in excess of £1300.

A small offering of Angus cross cattle were sold prior to the special monthly sale of native breed sorts to be held next week and these peaked at £1600 for a huge, deep, square bullock by a registered Angus sire from Ken Sisterson, Newlands Haugh.

Not to be outdone on the day several noted consignments of Limousin sired cattle were brought forward and these continued to sell well at Hexham. These peaked at £1570 for steers from John Miller, Airy Holm and his penful of 8 averaged a cracking £1433 per head.

Later in the sale, as is usual at this centre, a nice entry of younger, yearling and spring born types were offered and these cattle saw a notable lift in trade compared to that seen before the festive season. Highlights within this category included a nice pen of well grown bullocks from John Reed, The Knarr, Slaggyford, Carlisle that peaked at £1300 and averaged £1222, all selling to one North Yorkshire based regular Hexham purchaser.

Younger still were a super run of 20 Charolais cross spring born suckled calves from Whittingham based father and son team, John and Harry Sordy, Alnham which at 9 months found keen bidders for their trade to peak at £970 and average £922 per head.

With a buoyant trade spurred on by an excellent show of cattle and a ringside of dedicated purchasers the auctioneers were delighted to report an overall sale average of £1068 per head representing an increase of over £100 on the corresponding sale last year.
