Three Top Jerseys in the UK’s Cogent Catalogue
Cogent’s involvement with the Jersey breed has been stepped up a gear this autumn, as the company launches by far the largest and most comprehensive Jersey catalogue ever available to UK farmers.
The move reflects the growing appreciation of Jersey cattle in both the UK and around the world, as the breed increasingly proves itself to be a highly efficient converter of feed into milk and milk solids, producing a smaller carbon footprint and delivering more nutrient-rich milk than any other breed.
Three breed-leading bulls
Amongst the headline bulls in the new catalogue is the number one sire ranked on Profitable Lifetime Index; the world’s leading bull for Type Merit; and the breed’s most ‘complete package’ bull which combines both commercial production and high type credentials.
VJ Lure – most profitable sire of the breed
Leading the way on PLI amongst all UK and international bulls is VJ Lure, offering a massive £218 PLI and the best of the health and fitness traits for which Danish breeding is renowned. Excelling in particular for daughter fertility (Fertility Index +4.8) while also lowering cell counts (SCC Index -10), VJ Lure transmits a remarkable 30kg fat and 19.4kg protein, together with high percentages for both components.
“All of this combines to make him the most profitable sire of the breed,” says Cogent’s Jersey specialist, Derrick Frigot, who believes this bull will have wide appeal among commercially focussed breeders.
Tequila – number one type transmitter
For those who want an injection of type, he says the highest scoring bull of the breed for the purpose is Tequila. Used extensively across the USA and increasingly in the UK, this bull scores an impressive 3.4 Type Merit and 3.3 for mammary composite.
“This is a bull that does the job, whether that’s improving poorer type cows in any commercial herd or breeding a cow for the show ring,” says Mr Frigot.
Valentino – the most complete package Jersey bull
For the most complete package of all, he says the recommendation is to use Valentino, a bull who offers the highest Type Merit at +2.4 of all the top 100 available PLI bulls. Valentino’s PLI is also an impressive £163, ranking him in the top 20 for the Jersey breed. Mammary conformation is also outstanding (+2.5) while at 766kg his Predicted Transmitting Ability is amongst the highest in the Jersey breed for milk production.
“Valentino has performance all the way through his pedigree,” continues Mr Frigot. “His sire is the well-known Parade Louie while his dam, the renowned D&E Paramount Violet EX90, has numerous sons in AI including three of the top 20 bulls ranked on PLI.
“We are incredibly excited at Cogent about the prospects for the Jersey breed, so it is a pleasure to see bulls of this calibre – alongside others that are proven in the UK – available to UK farmers,” he concludes.
