Cogent Launches Ultimate Polled Holstein Bloodline

A new, proven Holstein bull being launched by Cogent this week has the added attraction of the polled gene, which is increasingly sought by dairy cattle breeders wishing to avoid the process of de-horning.

Ards Skipper Red is the only red and white heterozygous polled bull proven in the UK, and as such, has a 50 per cent chance of passing the polled gene on to his offspring.

“Any progeny which inherit this dominant gene will be polled themselves, and they also have a reasonable chance of being red,” says Andy Smith from Cogent.

“This is because the bull is red himself, so if this is matched with the same coat colouration inherited from the dam, the offspring will also be red,” he says.

But Skipper Red is much more than just a polled red and white bull, and the other attributes he brings are seen in particular through his linear type profile.

With a 1.74 Type Merit and an impressive 2.14 for mammary traits, he produces daughters with excellent udders which are high, wide and well attached, with the added bonus of having well-placed teats that are slightly longer than average. As the sire of moderate-sized daughters with an average rather than extreme leg set, he also transmits long lifespans to his daughters.

The high type credentials of Skipper Red are little surprise when his breeding is considered, as the Sara cow family from which he descends has a long track-record of transmitting excellent conformation.

Skipper’s grandam, Copywood Integrity Sara EX93 is not only a former Royal Show and National Holstein Show champion, but she has bred 25 VG or EX daughters. Many of these have produced huge volumes of milk, none more so than Riverdane PS Sara EX94 who gave 18,478kg in 305 days during her third lactation.

The final bonus Skipper Red brings is complete outcross bloodlines, and with no Shottle, Oman, Planet or Goldwyn in his pedigree he’ll have additional appeal to breeders seeking to broaden their herds’ genetic base.

“We are delighted to be launching Skipper Red following his graduation in the proof run this week, and we feel he will play an important role in improving the welfare of Holstein cattle and helping breeders keen to acquire the coveted red and white gene,” he says.
