An invitation sheep dog trial between teams from six areas of the Highland and Islands will be a major feature of NSA Highlandsheep at Dingwall on May 30.

The novel trial between teams from Caithness, Inverness, Lochaber, Ross-shire, Skye and Lewis, and Sutherland has been organised by well-known sheep dog handler, Scott Renwick, Clachan Farm House, Lochbroom, Ullapool, and will feature a total of 33 handlers.

Each team will complete five, six or seven runs, depending on how many each team can muster, and the average score of each team will determine the winning team who will be presented with an engraved rosebowl kindly donated by sponsors, Conanvet Ltd, Scotland’s oldest established veterinary practice based at Dingwall.

The individual handler with the highest points will also receive prize money of £150 and the runner-up £100, with £75, £40 and £25, for third, fourth and fifth place.

Five juniors under the age of 18 have been invited to take part in a separate competition for young handlers.

The competition will start at 9.15am and will take place in a field adjacent to Dingwall Mart where NSA Highlandsheep is being held. The judge will be Mrs Marlene Munro from Culloden, Inverness, and the trophy and prizes will be presented by NSA Scotland chairman, Mrs Sybil Macpherson, at 4.00pm.

“We’ve never had a district competition like this in the north before and many of the top handlers in the area have accepted the invitation to take part,” said Mr Renwick. “Competition will be fierce as the teams are exceptionally strong.”

Texel x Cheviot sheep are being provided for the competition by Ewan Macdonald, Conon Brae Farms, Torgorm, Conon Bridge.

NSA Highlandsheep is being organised by the Scottish Region of the National Sheep Association and is the first event of its kind held in the Highlands since Scotland’s national sheep event, NSA Scotsheep, in 1998.

The event is being hosted at Dingwall Mart by Dingwall and Highland Marts Ltd with leading animal feed manufacturers, Harbro Ltd, as major sponsor.
