Herefordshire Producer Celebrates Texel Survey Win

Commercial and pedigree sheep farmer Ed Samuel of St Weonards, Herefordshire, is celebrating after winning a new Ritchie lamb weighing crate in a prize draw run by the Texel Sheep Society in 2012.

Mr Samuel, who runs 950 ewes in partnership with his father Viv, was one of more than 1500 producers to complete the 'Tell Texel' survey at events in 2012 and was drawn at random from all the completed surveys as the winner of the weigh crate.

Speaking after learning of his win Mr Samuel said he was delighted to have won the prize which would, he said, would be extremely useful in the day to day management of the commercial and pedigree flocks.

"Running two pedigree flocks as well as more than 700 commercial ewes, a mix of Mules, Suffolk x Mules and Welsh ewes, means there is always plenty of work to be done and anything which makes life easier is always welcome.

"We sell all our prime lambs liveweight through Hereford market, so being able to weigh them when drawing them is essential. The new weigh crate will help with this and also help with lamb selection in the pedigree flocks too."

British Texel Sheep Society chief executive John Yates said the 'Tell Texel' survey had been extremely popular with commercial producers and had drawn a massive response.

"The survey was designed to help the Society and, as a consequence, Texel breeders to gain further understanding of the needs of commercial producers' needs when choosing Texel breeding stock.

"The information will be used to help the Society develop its breed development and knowledge transfer strategies, for the benefit of the membership and wider industry."

The survey was completed at various events throughout 2012, from auction markets to specialist sheep events, with plenty also received directly through the Society's website and Facebook pages.

"We'd like to thank everyone who took the time to complete the ‘Tell Texel’ commercial survey and Ritchie Agricultural for their generous support of the prize."
