Increased Demand for Store Cattle at Hexham

Hexham & Northern Marts had forward an entry of exactly 1220 head of cattle for their May Term sale on Friday 10th May 2013.

Following on from a great prize show and sale the previous week the company saw a very similar entry to that of the corresponding sale last year. With the emphasis on yearling cattle last week a good entry of over 380 older sorts were presented and both classes of forward steers and heifers saw increased demand ringside.

Despite a 9am start due to the large entry a good crowd were ringside for the beginning and as such a cracking Limousin cross Blue heifer from Messrs Bell, Woodhall at 26 months was presented by Richard Bell and in good fettle sold well at £1520 to be the dearest female on the day.

She was followed into the ring by a thumping Limousin bullock from Hugh Walton, Settlingstones which at 18 months ranked as one of the highest priced steers of the day at £1480 highlighting the Hexham ring as a premier outlet for quality cattle, whatever the time of day.

No fewer than nineteen cattle sold in excess of £1500 but the bell was rung twice at £1600, first for a Limousin cross steer at 22 months shown by Shaw Eggleston Jnr, Chollerton then again for a Blonde cross at the same age from weekly supporters David Robson & Sons, Merryshields. Messrs Eggleston sold 5 to average £1494 and Messrs Robson the same to £1458 however trade of the day, for the third week in succession, was for the 39 Charolais and Limousin cross cattle at 20 months consigned buy Willie Woodman, Great Chesters. Once again these were presented in tip-top condition and commanded furious bidding amongst all high-end finishers in attendance with steers peaking at £1590 (23 avge £1516) and heifers at £1400 (16 avge £1250).

Furthermore and worthy of note were the tremendous run of 19 bullocks by the Limousin bull From Jasper Wardle, Brokenheugh which stood younger at 18 months but with exceptional shape and scope sold quickly to top at £1460 and average a level £1343. A lone heifer from the same home in the same seam also sold well at £1450. A great run of heifers from now regular consignors Derek & Vincent Milburn, Holling Hill in the 20-24 months age bracket saw a fast trade topped at £1400 and sent the brothers home smiling with a £1214 average.

A small offering of Angus cross cattle sold well as a prelude to next weeks’ native breed sale and topped at £1445 for a steer from Selby & Alan Robson, Yatesfield and a heifer at £1275 from the Rio Tinto owned Alcan farms, East Moor, Morpeth.

With the remainder of the catalogue made up by yearling and younger sorts trade for stronger types in this category remained buoyant whilst plainer, less well done sorts were harder to allocate.

Several noted large consignments of various mainstay breeds sold well including the following steers; Charolais from Lewis Forster, West Nubbock peaking at £1200; Limousin from George Walton & Sons, Greyside at £1335, and British Blue from Ken Robinson, Warksfield Head at £1255.

Another good entry is expected for next week including native breed cattle and vendors are urged to take advantage of recent good rates.
