Hilltara Herd Reigns Supreme at Irish National Holstein Show

A third calver from Sam and John McCormick’s noted 250-cow Hilltara herd based at Bangor, County Down, was the supreme overall champion and exhibitor-bred champion, at the 2013 Irish National Holstein Show, held at Moira.

The Ocean View Zenith daughter, Hilltara Zenith Echo EX93, was described by judge Edward Griffiths as an outstanding cow.

“She is one of the best cows I have ever had the pleasure of judging – a strong, well balanced cow with a fabulous udder. Exactly the type of cow that we all aspire to breed and milk,” said Mr Griffiths who runs the 150-cow Coachgate Holstein Herd at Penistone near Sheffield.

The popular choice for champion was bred from Hilltara Champion Echo EX92, herself a former Irish National Holstein Show winner.

Hilltara Zenith Echo’s accolades include Holstein champion and reserve interbreed champion at the RUAS Winter Fair in December 2012; and runner-up in the 2012 McLarnon Feeds NISA Dairy Cow of the Year Championship. She is also a high yielding cow with exceptional components, having produced over 11,600kgs at 4.49% butterfat and 3.43% protein in her second 305-day lactation.

Scooping the reserve supreme and reserve exhibitor-bred championship awards was Kilvergan Duplex Ethel 2 VG89 , bred by Stephen Haffey, and sons Timothy, David and Aaron, who run 250 cows at Lurgan, County Armagh.

She made her showring debut at last year’s Irish National Holstein Show, claiming the intermediate championship, and overall honourable mention awards.

Sired by Mesland Duplex, her dam is the noted Bricknell Rubens Ethel 3 EX93 – winner of the honourable mention award at the 2008 RUAS Winter Fair at Balmoral. Calved in December she is currently producing 40 kilos per day.

Edward Griffiths added:”The reserve champion is a super second calver with a great future ahead of her. She is stylish, full of bloom, and has a super udder. This is my kind of junior cow!”

The intermediate champion Gravelhill Alexander Hope VG88, owned by Conor McAufield, Lisburn, County Antrim, secured the honourable mention ribbons in the overall championship line-up. Sired by Golden Oaks ST Alexander, she is bred from seven straight generations of EX dams, and was purchased privately from David and Hilary Wilson, Newtownabbey, County Antrim.

Calved in December and yielding 38 kilos daily, she classified VG88 at three weeks fresh. Conor McAufield, who runs the 160-cow Lissue herd, confirmed that this much admired heifer was destined for an ET programme following Balmoral Show in May.

“It was a close call between the reserve champion and honourable mention winners,” admitted Edward Griffiths. “This heifer caught my eye, and was an easy winner for the junior championship. She is certainly one to watch out for in the future.”

The Sicy Knowledge daughter, Hilltara Knowledge Maud, secured the reserve intermediate championship for Sam and John McCormick.

Honourable mention in the intermediate championship line-up was Hilltara Jeeves Echo VG86, also exhibited by the McCormick duo. Sired by Ked Outside Jeeves, she is bred from Hilltara Gibson Echo EX94.

Leading the junior championship parade was the Maple Downs Atwood daughter, Ards Atwood Lou Ella, an August 2011 born heifer from the herd of Harry Patton and Sons, Newtownards, County Down. She is bred from the EX92 classified Ards Bolton Lou Ella.

Runner-up was Printshop Ross Gillian 29, a November 2011 born Plain O Durham Ross daughter, bred by the father and son team of Gaston and John Wallace, Nutt’s Corner, County Antrim. Her dam is the VG88 Printshop Outside Gillian 21.

Claiming the honourable mention award in the junior section of the show was Priestland 5317 Royal Martha, an April 2012 born heifer from the herd of Iain and Joyce McLean and family, Bushmills, County Antrim. Sired by the home-bred Priestland Royal, by Windy Knoll View Pronto ET, she is out of Priestland 4847 Shottle Martha.

Sam and John McCormick’s Hilltara herd, founded in 1985, also claimed the premier breeder and premier exhibitor awards.

Holstein NI chairman Jay Warden thanked Edward Griffiths for officiating as judge and presented him with a token of the club’s appreciation. “Congratulations to all of the winners, and a big thank you to all of the exhibitors who participated in this year’s show.

“A special word of thanks to our valued sponsors, without whom, this event would not have been possible; and to everyone who contributed to the success of the event.”
