175 Years of The Cumberland Show

This year the Cumberland Agricultural Society celebrates by holding it’s 175th show. The Cumberland Show promotes farming, countryside and food and is held on Saturday 8th June at Carlisle Racecourse.

The Cumberland Show will host a range of livestock classes as usual, with thousands of animals expected to be on display. This includes cattle, sheep, horses and dogs. The food hall will be packed with local tasty products, and cookery demonstrations held during the day.

Home industries, a new name for 2013, hosts a marquee displaying hundreds of home made items by local people, and features entered by schools for their competitions.

The day is packed with entertainment from the Shetland Pony Grand National, really popular the last time they attended, and the return of Titan the Robot who thrilled the crowds last year. A host of other activities take place during the day with birds of prey, wrestling, singing, dancing, music and some special nostalgia events for the 175th show.

The ever popular model farm, with young animals and demonstrations of farming activities, will entertain the family again. The countryside area of the show is being planned to display skills that take place in rural areas, and will be packed with information about the great Cumbrian outdoors. Some new and surprise events around the show are in preparation for anyone to take part in during the day.

Bookings are being taken for the trading areas of the show and the Society expects there to be several hundred stands of all types from tractors to cars, and from handbags to donuts. Local caterers are lined up to provide delicious snacks throughout the show.

The Cumberland Show is a great value family day out. Children up to 16 years go free again, and the advance ticket adult price is £10. A family can have a great time all day for just £20. For 2013 this is even better value with Carlisle racecourse offering a free ticket to the racing on Monday evening 3rd June for every show ticket purchased before 31st May. Tickets are available online now, and can soon be obtained from various outlets in north Cumbria. Buses from Carlisle city centre will again be free, with free parking at the racecourse site.

The 2013 show is on Saturday June 8th, from 9am to 6pm, at Carlisle Racecourse.

The Cumberland Show started in 1832, but some shows have been cancelled due to war, disease and weather during that time. The show has been held on different times of the year throughout it’s long history, and at several different venues including Warwick Road, Bitts Park and Rickerby Park.

The Cumberland Show this year is held in association with Carrs Billington Agriculture. It’s media partner is Cumbrian Newspapers and the event is supported by many local businesses including Reays, J&S Wilkinson, Cumberland Building Society, Armstrong Watson, Dodd & Co., Harrison & Hetherington, David Allen, Lloyds and Norbrook.
