North Sheep

The 1000 acre farm runs flocks of 1000 horned Dalesbred ewes and 300 Masham and Mule ewes. Texel tups are used on the crossbred ewes. A suckler herd of 100 cows are kept, crossed with Limousin bulls.

NSA North Sheep 2013 will be building on its previous success in 2011, when the event was held in Northumberland, with a crowd of more than 7,000 farming visitors from all parts of the UK, and 230 trade stands. The event will focus on the way ahead for the British sheep industry as its gears up to new challenges and opportunities for the years ahead.

NSA North Sheep organisers are also reflecting their firm commitment towards encouraging all students and youngsters involved in practical sheep management activities by staging the third NSA North Sheep Young Shepherd of the Year Award. New for 2013 will be a sheep shearing competition. Stockjudging and lamb selection will continue. Amateur chefs will again take part in the Ready Steady Cook competition. In addition, the NSA North Sheep committee has organised a comprehensive array of practical activities including dry stone walling demonstrations, stickmaking, spinning, weaving and felting displays as well as a traditional farmers market and craft stalls.

“We are delighted to return the event to North Yorkshire, a major sheep producing county, for the first time in more than a decade,” says event organizer, Julie Sedgewick “NSA North Sheep will provide the opportunity to discuss a range of issues focused on how producers can improve their business efficiencies”
