Darlington Mart Christmas Primestock Show and Sale
2012-12-07

Darlington Mart had forward 348 cattle and 4273 sheep at their annual Christmas show & sale on Thursday 6th December 2012.

An outstanding show of stock was on display consisting of 121 young bulls, 96 steers, 131 heifers, 2959 prime lambs and 1314 cast sheep. 65 prime pigs were also sold.

British Blue heifer

The show cattle were ably judged by Mr Mike Todd of Todds the Butchers, Haughton Green, Darlington. Large classes of exceptional quality gave the judge a extremely demanding task in selecting the championship winners.

He finally awarded the overall championship to Mr M Robinson & Son East Alwent Farm and his British Blue heifer that later realised 400p/kg & £2145 and purchased by Mr Paul Taylor Garthwaite of H Taylor & Sons Butchers Darlington.

The reserve championship was awarded to JV&JA Hodgson, The Grange, for a British Blue Steer that realised 320p/kg & £2183 and purchased by W Piper Butchers of Houghton Le Spring.

The bull championship was awarded to J&A Matten of Avenue Farm for an exceptional British Blue that sold to 300p & £2545 to Global Foods of Bradford.

The show sheep were expertly judged by Mr Robert Skelton of New Hall Farm, Dearham. He awarded the supreme championship to Mr Colin Dinsdale, High Pasture, Chapman Hill Farm for his pen of Texel lambs that realised 300pkg & £145, purchased by Mr Ali Shann of Yorkshire Halal, Keighley. The reserve championship was awarded to Ben Layfield, again for a pen of Texel lambs, that realised 230p & £100, purchased by Robert Skelton on behalf of J Penny & Sons.

All vendors and purchasers were in a buoyant mood with many people commenting that this was was one of the finest shows of cattle and sheep seen at any christmas primestock show and sale in the UK.
