Longtown Primestock Sale
2012-11-22

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart PLC had forward 48 prime cattle, 40 over thirty month cattle, 5,244 prime lambs and 6,479 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 22nd November 2012.

Longtown cattle ring

Some better quality prime cattle on offer met a keen demand and the sale was topped at 231.5p for a Limousin heifer shown by R. Neill, Upper Tinwald, others sold to 222.5p, 219.5p also from Messrs Neill with all 3 being purchased buy Mr J. Little.

A plainer show of cast cows forward saw a plainer cows sharper and the sale was topped at 186.5p for a Limousin from Messrs Rome, Shawhead.

Longtown sheep ring

Another large show of 5,244 lambs was forward to a busy ring of buyers. The sale average was 151.4p, which fell from a 157p average in the first three hours when the lambs were sold bone dry. More export lambs required to fulfil orders.

The sale was topped at 203p per kilo for Beltex from Haithwaite and to £90.80 per head for Texels from Westside, £89.80 Kirkton; Suffolk £87.80 South Farden, £83.80 Howthat; Greyface £83.80 Kilnford Croft, £68.80 Albierigg; Charollais £76.80 Streethead, £71.80 Newtown; Half Bred £75.80 Dodgsonstown, £69.80 High Moat; Blackface £66.50 South Farden, £59.80 Winterhopeburn; Leicester £63.80 Old Police House, £60 Woodhouse; Hill Cheviot £63.80 Roughet Hill, £62.80 Parkhill; Cheviot Mule £59.80 North House, £55 Parkhill.

Another fine show of 6,479 cast ewes and rams was forward to a full ring of buyers, demand was stronger for the biggest heavy ewes and ewes well fleshed as these remain short of requirements. Large numbers of plainer ewes and ewes having lost condition still forward and showing no signs of rising.
