A sizeable increase in live sheep entries - spurred on by the introduction of new classes for novice handlers - sets the stage for this year's English Winter Fair livestock showcase at Staffs County Showground on the weekend of Nov 17-18, reports chairman Ray Nield.
The focus of the competition remains on producing
top quality carcases for the market.
In what promises to be an action-packed weekend for vistiors and exhibitors alike, organisers can confirm overall entries across all classes are very similar to 2011. Adding to live ring competitions the National Federation of Young Farmers Club's national stock-judging competition will see 18 counties represented vying for prizes sponsored by the English Beef & Lamb Executive.
Elsewhere the Young Limousin Breeders' Club brings its Anglo Irish stock-judging competition to this year's show and retail supermarket Asda is backing Young Handlers competitions. "To all our sponsors I'd like to say the very big thank you as without their commitment and support the English Winter Fair could not continue to promote the very best of British livestock," says show chairman Ray Nield.
Entries for seasonal turkey and geese classes and the British Pig Executive-backed Products competitons for food made with British meat remain open until nearer show date. Full details can be found on-line at www.staffscountyshowground.co.uk.
This year's machinery trade stands have been fully booked and the Christmas Fayre quality gift and craft retail area promises to be over-subscribed, reports organising body the Staffordshire & Birmingham Agricultural Society. Meat buyers wishing to attend the sale of prize-winning livestock and carcases can register for passes by contacting auctioneers Bagshwas on 01889-562811.
And for those wanting to make the most of a family outing, ticket prices have been frozen at 2011 rates (£10/adult with accompanied under 16s and YFC members FoC) with discount pre-booked tickets (£8/adult) will remain available until 5pm Nov 13. Car parking is free and doors open 9.30am each day.
