Llanarth Beef Shorthorns Peak at 3,750gns in Chelford

Beef Shorthorn females were in demand selling to 3,750gns at the breed society’s collective sale featuring the first stage of Keith Mitchell’s Ceredigion based Llanarth herd dispersal at Chelford on Saturday 10 November.

Llanarth females dominated the trade at 3,750gns, led by Llanarth Emlyns Hazel TI +16, SRI +11, an 18 month old in calf red and white heifer. Purchased by B M S Thomas, Llanfyrnach, Dyfed, this one was by the homebred Llanarth Centaurs Ethan and out of Ballard Wildeyes.

Secured for a bid of 3,000gns was Llanarth Emlyns Hatty TI +21, SRI +17, an 18 month old in calf light roan heifer. Hatty, by Llanarth Emlyn and out of a homebred dam, was bought by Irish breeder B Lang, Ballinacarrow, Sligo. The same buyer bid 2,800gns for Llanarth Bracken TI +16, SRI +12. This one was an in calf seven year old red and white cow by Tofts Rigger and out of a homebred dam. Mr Lang also made a 2,400gns call for Llanarth Cinders TI +15, SRI +14, a six year old in calf red and white cow by Rigger and out of a homebred dam.

Knocked down sold at 2,700gns was Llanarth Emlyns Hana TI +19, SRI +13. Purchased by G H Towers, Wellford, Northamptonshire, this 19 month old in calf white heifer was by Emlyn and out of a homebred dam.

A call of 2,600gns was made twice. First up was Llanarth Bella TI +13, SRI +11, an in calf seven year old red and white Rigger daughter and out of a homebred dam, secured by J R Pearce, Ashbourne, Derbyshire.

Up next at 2,600gns was Llanarth Frances, a three year old in calf red heifer by Llanarth Titan and out of a homebred dam. The purchaser was J Townsend, Southampton, Hampshire.

A red and white Ethan daughter sold for 2,550gns. Llanarth Ethans Heather, an in calf 18 month old out of a homebred dam, went home with D K Jones, Llandysul, Ceredigion. The same buyer bid 2,400gns for Llanarth Amy, an in calf eight year old light roan cow. This one was by Chapelton Nobility and out of a homebred dam.

Two Llanarth females realised 2,500gns. Llanarth Eileen, an in calf four year old red cow by Titan and out of a homebred cow was secured first by T E Birtles, Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire.

Also sold at 2,500gns was Llanarth Emlyns Hayley TI +12, SRI +12, a 19 month old in calf white heifer. This Emlyn daughter and out of a homebred dam was purchased by D M Lampard, Llangadog, Carmarthenshire.

Leading the rest of the sale at 2,000gns was Sannan Seren Bonni 1 TI +13, SRI +11 from T A Williams, Denbigh, Conwy. This 19 month old roan heifer was by Cairnsmore Amos and out of a homebred dam. She was purchased by Mr Lang. The same buyer also bid 1,500gns for Brynonn Amber, a two year old dark roan heifer by Sannan Burt and out of Holkin Lass Button. This one was from J Shone, Mold Flintshire.

The same breeder took a call of 1,450gns for cow and calf unit Holkin Clementine Bella, a four year old red and white cow by Cairnsmore Xactly Whatyouwant, out of Holkin Clementine, and her five month old light roan heifer calf Brynonn Clover by Holmeere Issac. They were knocked down sold to P Pennington, Glossop, Derbyshire. Ms Shone then realised 1,400gns for the two year old red and white heifer Brynonn Alice, a Burt daughter and out of Holkin Tess Bracken. She was bought by L T Shepherd, Bradfield, Sheffield.

Messrs Williams went on to take a bid of 1,750gns from R J and N M Edwards and Sons, Llangollen, Denbighshire, for Sannan Tessa 2 TI +14, a 19 month old red and white heifer also by Amos and out of Tessa Roxane of Upsall. The same buyer also paid 1,400gns for Sannan Doris 1 TI +10, an 18 month old roan heifer by Amos and out of Llanarth Eleanor from the same breeder. Another Amos daughter from Messrs Williams sold for 1,400gns. Sannan Emily TI +12, an 18 month old roan heifer out of Llanarth Emily was purchased by B Ford, Stockport, Cheshire.

The top price bull at 1,400gns was Podehole Ambassador, entered by R Catton, Harpenden, Hertfordshire. This five year old red and white bull by Nevada Warrior and out of Westerbleaton Swallow 2 was taken home by I Clough, Pickering, Yorkshire.

Averages: Llanarth dispersal: 14 in calf cows, £1,948; 5 served heifers, £3,045; 2 bulls, £1,680. Collective: 1 cow with calf at foot, £1,522.50; 5 in calf cows, £1,092; 2 in calf heifers, £1,522.50; 6 maiden heifers, £1,522.50, 2 bulls, £1,365.
