Lawsons Swoop Again to Steal Craven Dairy Auction Thunder
2012-10-10

A fourth successive Craven Dairy Auction championship, plus the reserve championship and first prize wins and top price coups in both show classes, made for yet another notable day for first-rate milkers from the Newbirks Holstein pedigree herd of A Lawson & Son, of Mill Farm, Arthington, at the early October show and sale at Skipton Auction Mart. The Lawsons – husband and wife David and Claire, and their son Matthew – saw their first prize newly calven heifer, like their September victor by the American-based ABS Global sire Bomaz Boulder, progress to win the title at the latest renewal. Giving 27 litres, she sold for the day’s top price of £2,200 to Edward Fort, of Silsden.

The same buyer also snapped up the Lawsons’ first prize newly calven cow for £1,880, top price in class.

For good measure, the family had the second prize newly calven heifer and reserve champion, which fell for £2,000 to regular dairy buyer Wick Williams, of Nantwich, Cheshire. Newly calven heifers averaged £1,742 and newly calven cows £1,640.

A consignment of 14 maiden heifers from east coast vendors P & JR Emsley, of Scalby, Scarborough, sold to a high of £565 - this falling to Craven Dairy Auction regulars Raymond and Robert Johnson, of Felliscliffe, Harrogate - and an overall average of £461 per head. Judge was Geoff Booth, of Lotherdale.
