Longtown Primestock Sale
2012-09-28

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart PLC had forward 51 prime cattle, 10 young bulls, 30 over thirty month cattle, 5,571 prime lambs and 9,571 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 27th September 2012.

Longtown cattle ring

Prime cattle were an improved show of quality and with more buyers forward saw a rise in trade. Top of 229.5p for a Charolais heifer from J. & N. Blaylock & Son, Hallburn, with Limousins to 227.5p from W. & W. Faulder, Houghton House.

A similar show of prime bulls met a similar trade with Limousins topping the sale at 213.5p from Messrs Jardine, The Yett.

A larger and improved show of OTM cows met a good trade with plenty of keen bidders. Limousins topped at 187.5p shown by P. Dayson, Whamtown, others to 181.5p from Messrs Gass, Nunscleugh.

A larger show of 5,571 prime lambs were forward with a huge show of light lambs. Export type, well fleshed lambs sold well with leaner types little more than store price. Overall average of 158.2p, SQQ 160p.

A record show of 9,802 ewes and rams, the largest number since pre foot and mouth, sold to an increased ringside of buyers with more leaner grazing ewes forward and all types slightly easier on the week.
