Crawfords Lead Limousin Line-Up at Tullamore Show
2012-08-16

The Northern Ireland show season reached a climax at Enniskillen last week, but County Fermanagh Limousin breeders Herbie Crawford, and sons Raymond and Stephen, are still topping the leader boards at shows in southern Ireland.

Animals from the family’s Clones-based herd in County Monaghan, had a clean sweep in the championship line-up at last weekend’s 23rd Irish National Limousin Show, held at Tullamore.

Claiming the day’s female and supreme overall championship titles was the eight-year-old cow Clonlara Valance, shown with Erne Halfway, her Sauvignon bull calf at foot. Sired by the 55,000gns Grahams Samson – Carlisle champion in 2003, she is bred from Darragh Noelle and was purchased privately in 2009 from Colin Hogg in County Clare.

Judge, Gary Swindlehurst, farm manager at the noted Procters herd based in Lancashire, awarded the male and reserve supreme championship ribbons to the Crawford family’s senior bull Silvandene Defoe. This July 2008 born entry is by the highly acclaimed Mas du Clo, and bred from the French dam Niege.

Both animals are no stranger to success on the Northern Ireland show circuit, with Clonlara Valance having won the interbreed championship at Balmoral Show in 2010. Silvandene Defoe was also part of the family’s 2010 Balmoral Show team, and was a member of the award winning interbreed group of three.

The Crawford trios haul of rosettes didn’t end there, with Erne Fleur and Erne Fortress, both by the herd’s internationally recognised stock bull Sauvignon, taking first and second prizes in their class. The uncalved senior heifer Erne Edna, also by Sauvignon, stood second in her class.

The Crawford Brothers name has been synonymous with Limousin breeding for over 30 years, and the family were delighted to be crowned top exhibitor at the National Livestock Show in Tullamore.
