Harrison & Hetherington are proud to announce that on Friday the 10th of August they will be hosting the ‘Carlisle & Northern Counties Society’ Show and Sale of Suffolk Sheep. The event, to be held at Borderway Mart has attracted a record 241 entries, almost twice as many as the 2011 event.

It follows on from the huge success of last year’s show and sale which celebrated 125 years of the Suffolk Sheep Society.

Commenting on the 126th show and sale Lewis McClinton, Chief Executive of the Suffolk Sheep Society said;

“Carlisle is one of the Suffolk Society’s main sales and the premier sale in the North of England. This has been a difficult year for sheep farmers however trade has been holding up for better lots. The Carlisle sale at Harrison & Hetherington’s Borderway Mart will give Pedigree and Commercial farmers the opportunity to purchase some of the very best Suffolk genetics”.

The numbers entered for this year’s event surpassed all expectations and is an exciting milestone for the Suffolk Sheep Society. The one day event has attracted 241 entries comprising of:

  • Shearling Gimmers (20)
  • Ewe Lambs (21)
  • Shearling Rams (25)
  • Aged Rams (4)
  • Lamb Rams (171)

Judging will commence at 9.30am and there are six classes along with four championship and special awards. Judging will be Mr John Christie of the West Carse Flock in Stirling.

54 exhibitors from across England and Scotland will be arriving hoping to achieve exemplary prices in reward for the time and effort that has gone into breeding their animals.

Glynis Soulsby, Pedigree Suffolk Breeder and Chairperson of the Northern Counties Suffolk Society comments on what this well established show and sale means for the Breeders and Farmers in the North of England.

With Harrison &Hetherington being based at Carlisle it is central to the Northern countryside. This sale is bringing some of the bigger names into Cumbria for the Suffolk Breed – giving the northern area the opportunity to buy genetics from a larger pool”.

Summing up the event, David Pritchard, Operations Director of Harrison & Hetherington said;

“We are absolutely delighted with the response that has come forward for this year’s sale and it is exciting to see that we have attracted a number of new breeders to the event. Last year’s sale saw 97% clearance and topping the sale at 2,400gns was a Dumfriesshire ram from Hazel Martindale’s Landale flock, so we are expecting good returns at this year’s sale. The forecast for the next year’s sheep trade looks bright and the Suffolk has always been a dependable breed choice with the ability to grow well and finish quickly”.

The judging begins at 9.30am followed sharply by the sale at 11.30am. Borderway Mart is one of Harrison & Hetherington’s seven auction Marts and home to the annual Borderway Agri-Expo.
