Longtown Primestock Sale
2012-06-28

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart PLC had forward 75 prime cattle, 10 young bulls, 32 over thirty month cattle, 1,695 spring lambs, 567 prime hoggs and 4,097 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 28th June 2012.

Longtown cattle ring

A large show of prime cattle and a good show of quality saw a firm trade throughout. Top price of 225.5p for a Limousin heifer shown by D.J. Garthwaite & Son, Wyseby Hill Cottage. Limousin bullocks sold to 224.5p from A. & W.J. Taylor & Son, Dashwellgreen.

Longtown sheep ring

A smaller show of 1,695 Spring Lambs averaged 189.5p per kilo (SQQ 190.3p), following this week's decline in trade. Top of 221p per kilo for Texels from Eskdale Street and to £98.80 per head for Suffolks from Barnglies, £95.80, £92.20 Barnglies; Texel £97.80 Carran, £96.80 Barnglies, £95.80 H & K Farms; Zwartbles £86.80, £77.80 Holmlea; Oxford £80, £73.80 Guards; Charollais £78.80 Hallburn, £78.20 Rottington Hall, £76.80 The Chestnuts; Half Bred £73.80 High Moat; Cheviot Mule £70.80 Tarnhouse; Greyface £67.80 Kellah.

A smaller show of 567 prime hoggs forward with well fleshed hoggs of all weight ranges realising an excellent trade. The sale was topped at 179.2p per kilo for Blackface from Uppercleugh and to £88.80 per head for Suffolks from Broomhills, £87.50 Keepersshield; Texel £85.50 Keepersshield, £81.50 Uppercleugh; Greyface £82.50 Denbie Yett, £81.50 Keepersshield; Blackface £79.80, £79.50 South Mains; Charollais £74.50 East Mey, £63.50 Keepersshield; Hill Cheviot £67.50 Plumpe, £66.80 Haithwaite; Shetland £63.80 Achreamie; North Country Cheviot £61.80, £54.80 Longoe; Zwartbles £61.80 East Mey.

Another good show of 4,097 cast ewes and rams were forward to the usual ring of buyers with trade similar on the week, hill ewes and small ewes still short of buyers requirements. Rams demand premium prices and more could be sold to advantage.
