Longtown Primestock Sale
2012-05-17

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart PLC had forward 52 prime cattle, 3 young bulls, 19 over thirty month cattle, 178 spring lambs, 4,912 prime hoggs and 4,233 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 17th May 2012.

A similar show of prime cattle with plainer types harder to sell, but Limousin heifers still sold to 222.5p shown by Mr A. Irving, Toppin Castle and purchased by Mr J. Little, others sold to 216.5p from A. & W.J. Taylor & Son, Dashwell Green and 214.5p from W. & W. Faulder, Houghton House. Bullocks topped at 215.5p for a Limousin shown by Messrs Taylor, Dashwell Green and 214.5p, 212.5p from J.C. & D. Nicholson & Son, The Gill.

Young bulls sold to a top of 178.5p (£1,044) for British Blue from Becton Hall.

A smaller show of OTM cattle resulted in trade being slightly less on the week and topped at 153.5p for a Limousin from Shankbridge End.

Longtown sheep ring

The 178 spring lambs were again short of buyers requirements with heavy lambs realising no extra but lighter lambs getting a premium. Top per kilo of 234p (35 kilos) for Texels from Mossband House, with a top per head of £97.80 for Charollais from Maryholm, others £89.80 Maryholm, £87.20 Rottington Hall; Texel £90.20, £87.80 Raby Grange, £87.20 Mossband House; Suffolk £86.80 Whins, £86 Westend, £83.80 Low Hallburn; Oxford £82 Guards Farm.

The 4,912 prime hoggs forward averaged 174.6p (176.2p in SQQ) with only well fleshed hoggs receiving a premium, lean hoggs very hard to cash but 50 kilo + hoggs dearer on the week. A smaller show of 4,316 cast ewes and rams were forward to a smaller ring of buyers with heavy ewes harder to sell and smaller hill ewes looking a good price in comparison. Rams keenly sought after.
