Angus Bulls Sell to 6500gns in Carlisle

Friday’s sale of Aberdeen-Angus bulls and females sold to a top of 6500gns on four occasions at Borderway Mart, Carlisle, and averaged £3436.07 which is just shy of £400 up on this time last year.

The first to hit the 6500gns price tag was the overall male and supreme champion and winner of class four, Belhaven Beckenbaur K285, an ET-bred Hoff Limited Edition SC 594 son from John and Teena Gilmour, Penston, Macmerry. Tapped out to take the championship under judge Jim Ford, Kelso, this June 2010-born bull is out of the Hoff Head of the Class SC 534 daughter Hoff Bull SC 085 512 and sold to the judge.

Next at this money was the junior male champion Roscoe Elton K148 from Ross Farms Co Ltd, Gorebridge, Midlothian. Born in August 2010, he is by Flodden Warden E316 and is out of the Kincardine Castle Jacobite Eric daughter Craigbeck Elvira F363. Buyer here was A R Bell, Kirkton, Hawick.

Also selling at 6500gns was Newton Stewart-based Martin McCornick’s first prize winner McCornick Blumenthal K520, an April 2010-born Netherton Mr American E37 son. With a TSI of +37 and an SRI of +48, coupled with a milk figure of +14, he is out of the Rawburn El Cid Z432 daughter Huxton Bloom D183 and sold to L Jones, Cynwyd, Corwen.

The final bull at this price tag was Herefordshire-based Jeremy and Alina Price's Oakchurch Domino L029 when he sold to W and R Dunlop, Carnwath, Lanarkshire, and T A and R Laird, Biggar, Lanarkshire. This March 2011-born bull is by Netherallan Peter Pershore E052 and is out of the Hoff Limited Edition SC 594 daughter Oakchurch Duchess J123. This one has a milk figure of +19, a TSI of +45 and a SRI of +59.

Next highest price was 6000gns for Roscoe Front Runner K250 from previous vendors Ross Farms. By Flodden Warden E316, he is out of Blelack Juno Eric Z059 daughter Roscoe Fancie C951 and sold to R Richardson, Burdon, Sunderland.

Jeremy and Alina Price continued a good run of trade by selling Oakchurch Dynamo L036, a March 2011-born Abebrton Dazzle G160 son out of the Rawburn Transformer daughter Oakchurch Darlene J116. This one has a TSI of +34 and a SRI of +44 and was knocked down to J M and L M forbes, Lochdu Farms, Nairn, at 5700gns.

The Price family then sold Oakchurch Democrat K005 at 4800gns. He is an August 2010-born son of the homebred sire Oakchurch Dominator G035 out of Oakchurch Red Delia F021, who is a daughter of Rawburn No Limits 5N. He sold to J S Wood and Son, Carlisle, Cumbria.

Three bulls then sold at 4000gns, the first of which came when David Lucas and family sold Cheeklaw Proctor K373, a May 2010-born Eastern Greys Joseph Eric C100 son out of the Tweedside Jewgal Eric Z083 daughter Cheeklaw Poppet E196. He sold for W and W J Jardine, Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire.

The next at that money was the second prize Muirdean Evllumo K005 from John Arnott, Kelso, Roxburghshire. Born in May 2010, this Old Glenort Kallum D784 son is out of a homebred Lockerley Kruz Z310 daughter and sold to J McIntosh, Stranraer.

The final bull at this price tag was fourth placed Haymount Westar K031 from the Arnott family. By the 22,000gns Lorabar Blackstar G290, he is out of an Auchterforfar Don Star daughter and sold to D F Whiteley, Thirsk, Yorkshire.

Commenting on the sale of bulls, Society chief executive Ron McHattie said: “It was a very strong show and sale for top end commercial bulls, with buyers prepared to invest in well muscled, naturally fleshed bulls.”

The Price family topped the female offering with a call of 2600gns for the April 2009-born ET-bred Hoff Limited Edition daughter Oakchurch Duchess J122. She is out of the DMM Flex 6L daughter Southland Duchess 15N and sold with a Haymount Galacco F644 heifer calf at foot to previous buyers J M and L M Forbes, Lochdu Farms, Nairn.

The female champion, Shelau Joan Erica K172, from James and Jean Reid, Kilwinning, Ayrshire, then sold for 2000gns. Born in January 2010, she is by Galawater Brave Knight G273 and is out of a daughter of homebred sire Shelau Evoke Z0004 and sold having been served to Kiwi Fordafourie to Messrs Jenkinson, Kirkby Stephen.

Averages: 49 bulls £3436.07; 3 served heifer £1750.00; 3 cows with calf at foot £2100.00 (Harrison and Hetherington).
