Longtown Primestock Sale
2012-02-16

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart PLC had forward 42 prime cattle, 7 young bulls, 33 over thirty month cattle, 5,344 prime hoggs and 5,464 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 16th February 2012.

Longtown cattle ring

A smaller, plainer show of prime cattle, which saw plenty of cattle well into the £2’s. Topping at 222.5p for a Limousin heifer from J. & N. Blaylock & Son, Hallburn. Limousin bullocks sold to 215.5p from Messrs Taylor, Dashwell Green and British Blues to 213.5p from Messrs Irving, Toppin Castle.

Prime Bulls met a brisk trade, topping at 192.5p twice, both for Limousins, firstly from Meiklewhitriggs Farm and then from T.B. Imrie, Harelawhole. Black & Whites to 175.5p (x2) from Gillalees.

Longtown sheep ring

A larger show of 5,344 prime hoggs were forward to a full ring of buyers, with an overall average of 208.5p per kilo obtained. Export weight hoggs regularly between 210p and 240p and short of requirements, heavy hoggs harder to sell.

Hoggs sold to a top of 280p per kilo for Beltex from High Greenhill and The Nook (Bendle).
