Longtown Primestock Sale
2011-06-30

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 50 prime cattle, 1 young bull, 26 over thirty month cattle, 1,384 prime lambs, 446 prime hoggs and 3,379 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 30th June, 2011.

A smaller show of prime cattle met an outstanding trade, up 4.5p on the week. Top of 207.5p per kilo for a Limousin bullock from A. Irving, Toppin Castle who also sold a Blonde d’Aquitaine bullock at 206.5p and Charolais heifers at 191.5p.

A small show of Over Thirty Month cattle met another brisk trade and topped at 169.5p per kilo for a Limousin cow from G.R. & S.M. Makepeace, Black House.

A good show of 1,384 prime lambs was forward with numbers short of requirements due to farmers catching up with crop in good weather. This shortage resulted in the dearest average seen this week of 215.5p per kilo. The sale was topped at 231p per kilo for Texels from Messrs Gray, Sunnycroft and to £123.50 per head also for Texels from Messrs Sutherland, Carran, others £103.20 Sunnycroft, £100.50 Becton Hall and Carran; Suffolk £108.50 Barnglies, £104.50 Sykehead, £103.50 Hermitage; Beltex £104.50, £96.80 Roxburgh Mill; Half Bred £93.80 High Moat; Charollais £92.80 Kilnford Croft, £89.20 Becton Hall, £82.20 Mossthorn; Greyface £80 Sloda Hill; Swaledale £80 Nunscleugh; Zwartbles £77.20 Colte Coates; Oxford £75.80 The Beeches.

A small show of 446 prime hoggs was forward, with lambs short of requirement, hoggs with good flesh were keenly sought after, averaging 153.6p. Top price of 176p per kilo for Suffolks from Goldhill and to £80.50 for Texels from Bluebell, others £76.50 Lyneholm; Suffolk £76.50 Rockcliffe Cross, £75.50 Lirrit; Greyface £69.50 Low Hallburn, £68.50 Riggshield; Beltex £69.50, £68.50 Wood Farm; Blackface £64.80 Plumpe, £64.50 Bluebell; Cheviot £62.80 Plumpe.

A smaller show of 3,379 cast ewes and rams were forward with less numbers leaving buyers short of requirements, resulting in a good trade with averages being £5 to £8 up on the week.
