Longtown Primestock Sale
2011-05-26

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart PLC had forward 48 prime cattle, 41 over thirty month cattle, 516 spring lambs, 2,217 prime hoggs and 2,567 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 26th May, 2011.

Another good show of well finished cattle on offer but more handyweight cattle required to fill buyer’s orders. Prices peaked at 199.5p for a British Blue bullock from A. & W.J. Taylor & Son, Dashwell Green, purchased by W. Kirkup & Sons, Butchers, Longtown. Mr A. Irving, Toppin Castle sold a run of 6 Limousin heifers to average 193.1p and topped at 198.5p twice. Limousin bullocks topped at 189.5p from J.C. & D. Nicholson, The Gill.

A shortage of well fleshed cows and plenty of feeding cows on offer met another brisk trade. Blonde d’Aquitaine cows topped at 145.5p from G. Smith, Campingholm with Limousins to 134.5p from Messrs T. Hutton, How Farm.

A good show of 516 Spring Lambs was forward, with the average being 238.3p per kilo, in line with national trend. The sale was topped at 279p per kilo for Suffolks from Messrs Musgrave, Cardew Hall and to £128.20 per head for Suffolks from K. The 2,217 hoggets forward again met an animated trade and averaged 214.5p per kilo, with well fleshed hoggs still sought after.
