Longtown Primestock Sale
2011-05-12

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 46 prime cattle, 5 young bulls, 51 over thirty month cattle, 208 spring lambs, 4,998 prime hoggs and 4,230 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 12th May, 2011.

Prime cattle saw more heavyweights on offer and topped at 199.5p for a Limousin heifer from G.P. & E.A. Coates, Beckhall Farm with British Blue bullocks to 193.5p Upper Tinwald.

A bigger show of OTM cattle saw better quality cattle forward which met another brisk selling trade. Limousin cows topped at 153.5p from J. Common & son, Crossdykes Farm, others 142.5p, 136.5p Brisco Hill. Black & White cows to 121.5p Underwoodhouse.

Longtown Mart

A larger show of 208 Spring Lambs was forward with demand for under 45 kilos very strong. More handy weighted lambs could be sold to vendors advantage.

Top price of 331p per kilo and £145.50 per head for Texels from Rottington Hall, others £142.50 Low Hallburn; Oxford £121.50, £116.50 Guards; Suffolk £118.80 Bankhead of Tinwald, £118.50 Rottington Hall and The Land; Charollais £117.50 Rottington Hall.

In the second week of May, C & D Mart continued to surprise with numbers of Hoggs - 5,000 head again being forward. Good fleshed hoggs easily upheld recent high rates with a sale average of 238.9p per kilo. Many best hoggs regularly sold between 250p and 270p per kilo.

Another excellent show of 4,230 cast ewes and rams were forward to the usual full ring of buyers with trade for the heavy fat ewes being £5-£8 cheaper, but the hill type ewes and lean selling ewes maintaining recent rates.
