Longtown Primestock Sale
2011-04-21

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 73 prime cattle, 9 over thirty month cattle, 4,945 prime hoggs, 3 prime lambs and 3,800 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 21st April, 2011.

Another big show of prime cattle met a brisk trade throughout. Top price of 203.5p for a Limousin heifer from A Irving, Toppin Castle purchased by Jewitt Meat Wholesalers. Mr. Irving sold 3 heifers to average 197.4p. Belgian Blue heifers topped at 197.5p from GP & E A Coates, Beckhall. Mr. Coates run of heifers averaged 190.2p. Limousin bullocks topped at 192.5p twice from JW Vevers, High Stenries & R Neill, Uppertinwald.

The first prime lambs of the season were forward with Texels to £121.50 from Wyseby Hill Cottage and to 266p per kilo for Suffolks from Patties Hill.

A grand show of prime hoggs were forward and as other centres were short of numbers, more hoggs could have been sold to advantage. The sale averaged 238p per kilo. More sheep 40kg plus with good flesh are constantly required. Top price per kilo was 299p for Texels from RN Scott, West Meiklethwaite.
