Longtown Primestock Sale
2011-03-24

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 56 prime cattle, 4 young bulls, 24 over thirty month cattle, 6,661 prime hoggs and 4,524 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 24th March, 2011.

A mixed offering of prime cattle presented to the usual attendance of buyers. Trade upheld recent levels. Limousin heifers to 186.5p and 181.5p Dashwell Green, 178.5p Hallburn; Charolais 183.5p Hallburn, 173.5p Upper Mains. Heifers to £1,145.10 Upper Mains, £1,118.60 Wicket Thorn.

Limousin bullocks to 180.5p The Gill, 176.5p Haining House, 175.5p The Gill; British Blue 171.5p The Gill. Bullocks to £1,250.78 Sceughdyke, £1,207.50, £1,200.33 The Gill.

Young bulls were sharper, selling to 162.5p for Charolais from Shaw of Dryfe; Limousin 160p (£1,136) Morley Hill.

OTM cattle sold at improved values. Top per kilo of 168p for British Blue from Morley Hill; Angus 123p Girnwood; Holstein Friesian 119p The Stubb, 116p Dockray Hall; Charolais 118p Sceughdyke. Top per head of £1,268.40 for British Blue from Morley Hill; Charolais £991.20 Sceughdyke; Angus £940.95 Girnwood; Holstein £907.50 Jerriestown.

Longtown Mart

A monster show of 6,661 prime hoggs were forward to a full ring of buyers meeting one of the best trades saw anywhere for many years. The whole sale average was 218p per kilo and that included 1,263 hoggets under 32 kilos and 800 hoggets over 52 kilos.

An excellent run of 370 hoggets from Messrs Crick, Beach Farm sold to a top of £107.50 and averaged 225p per kilo.

The sale was topped at 271p per kilo for Beltex from Messrs Kennedy, Lurgan, with a top per head of £130.50 for Suffolks from Skelfhill, £122.50 Colte Coates, £113.50 Land Farm; Texel £126.50 Whitehill Cottage, £122.50 Clyth Mains, £118.50 Skelfhill; North Country Cheviot £117.50, £108.50 Carruthers, £106.50 Lurgan; Beltex £115.50 Newbigging, £109.50 Beechwood, £105.50 Sorbie and Trough Head; Hill Cheviot £114.50, £100.80, £100.50, £99.80 Blackwoodridge House, £98.80 Woodhall; Charollais £107.50 Beach Farm, £101.50 Moss Side, £100.50 North Greenhill and Mindork; Blackface £104.50 Corsebank, £103.50, £100.50 Penchrise, £99.50 Damhead; Greyface £101.50 Justicetown, £99.80 Nether Albie, £99.50 Sorbie; Dorset £86.80 Beach Farm, £84.80 Colte Coates; Leicester £81.80 Walton High Rigg, £80.50 Newbigging; Swaledale £75.50 Colte Coates, £73.80 Kirkhaugh, £72.50 Croft House and Howburn.

Also held today was the annual show and sale of Cheviot hoggets, kindly sponsored by P.J. Tractor Parts, Longtown, and which was ably judged by Mr Andrew Dawson, Sedbergh.

The overall champions in the South Country Cheviot section was won by Messrs Cartner, Blackwoodridgehouse, which scaled 51 kilos and realised £114.50 to Mr R. Booth.

In the North Country Cheviot section the championship was awarded to a pen of 42 kilos from Messrs Graham, Lawshall, realising £100 to Mr J. Tucker.

The 1,663 light weight hoggs sold to a top of £86.50 for Beltex from Low Fauld; Texel £84.80 Yulescroft, £83.20 Lorn; North Country Cheviot £78.80 Unthank, £77.80 Lurgan; Hill Cheviot £78.50 Tushielaw, £78.20 Shaw Head; Blackface £78.20 Dykehead, £74.80 Barlaes and Arnicle; Suffolk £76.80 Beach Farm, £75.80 Swaites; Charollais £75.80 Beach Farm; Greyface £73.80 Clonrae and Beach Farm; Herdwick £73.80 Newtown, £66.80 Tarnside; Zwartbles £67.50 Tushielaw; Swaledale £60.50, £55.50 Sunday Sight; Shetland £55.50 Dockray Hall.

Another good show of 4,327 cast ewes and rams sold to the usual ring of buyers with trade again flying and all classes, especially horned ewes, dearer on the week. A rise of £3 across the board was realised.
