Longtown Primestock Sale
2011-01-27

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 52 prime cattle, 44 over thirty month cattle, 4,353 prime hoggs and 5,138 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 27th January, 2011.

Prime cattle saw trade slightly easier on the week, following the national trend. Top price 183.5p for Limousin heifers from Messrs Blaylock, Hallburn and purchased by W Kirkup & Sons, Butchers, Longtown.

Others to 175.5p Toppin Castle, 173.5p Englishtown, 170.5p Dashwellgreen, 165.5p Houghton House & Brydekirk Mains; Charolais 165.5p Hallburn; British Blue 175.5p Houghton House, 167.5p Dashwellgreen. Top price per head was £1096.88 for Limousin from Toppin Castle, British Blue £1070.55 Houghton House.

Bullocks to 168.5p for Limousin from The Gill, 164.5p Nirvana, 162.5p Hallees, 161.5p Becton Hall, 160.5p The Gill. Top price per head £1170.88 for Limousin from Becton Hall, Charolais £1166.60 from Sceughdyke.

OTMS met a firmer trade with a better show of fleshed cows. Top price to 127.5p for Limousin cows from A & K McKinlay, Balure. Other Limousin 115.5p Blindhillbush, 106.5p Whamtown. Friesian 99.5p Glenzier Gardens, 95.5p The Stubb & Townhead, 93.5p Bleatarn; British Blue 107.5p Albierigg, 106.5p Balure, 101.5p Low Peninver; Angus 104.5p Low Peninver, 96.5p Tanlawhill. Top price per head £841.30, £787.88 for Friesian from Townhead; Limousin £734.85 Albierigg; British Blue £735.88 Low Peninver; Angus £736.73 Low Peninver.

A similar show of hoggs were forward to the usual ring of buyers. Export hoggs (36-42kg) and lightweight hoggs were easily sold and short of buyers requirements. Hoggs 44kg – 49kg proved harder to cash but 50kg plus hoggs were short of requirements. The overall sale average was 183.9p with the SQQ (32-45kg) averaging 187.6p. The sale topped at £108.50 for Texels from AR Bell, Kirkton and to 236p for Beltex from S Frizell, Thorneylands.
